Alaska 2009-2010 Flu Season

Re: Alaska - confirmed (9/6): 460 cases, 21 hospitalized, 3 deaths

Re: Alaska - confirmed (9/6): 460 cases, 21 hospitalized, 3 deaths

The last posted data from DOH was on September 2nd.

They usually update the totals on Wednesday, so I was surprised not to see new numbers today.

So much for transparency.

Apparently we have both swine flu and a severe URI bug circulating.

I updated the totals on this thread title based on new reports.

Re: Alaska - confirmed (9/30): unknown # cases, unknown # hospitalized, 5 deaths

Re: Alaska - confirmed (9/30): unknown # cases, unknown # hospitalized, 5 deaths

I changed the numbers in the thread title to reflect the fact that AK DHSS has said today they will no longer publish case counts, nor flu-related deaths.

The death count reflects information from a major newspaper's own statistics, but can no longer be said to consist of only novel H1N1 deaths.

Re: Alaska - confirmed (10/9): unknown # cases, hospitalizations - increasing, est. 5 deaths

Re: Alaska - confirmed (10/9): unknown # cases, hospitalizations - increasing, est. 5 deaths

Since the state is no longer releasing specific numbers for H1N1, the only thing that gives any information regarding trends is the ILI hospitalizations, which have increased. Other numbers aren't specific and most are badly out of date.

Alaska orders more swine flu vaccine

Associated Press - October 9, 2009 6:34 PM ET

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - State health officials have placed a second order for swine flu vaccine from the federal government.

Officials on Friday ordered 9,600 doses of injectable vaccine and 4,000 doses of nasal spray vaccine.

The vaccine is expected to arrive in Alaska next week, and will be distributed to hospitals, pediatricians and family doctors statewide.

As additional vaccine arrives in Alaska, officials say it will be more widely distributed.

The state's first order of 4,200 nasal spray vaccine was delivered Monday.

There have been five hospital-reported and lab-confirmed swine flu deaths in Alaska.

........There have been five hospital-reported and lab-confirmed swine flu deaths in Alaska.[/B]

The press has their own inside sources which are not providing information to the public statistics reported, primarily here;

My lastest (Sept 30) communication from AK DHSS:

Dear Denise xxxxxx,

I apologize if my previous answers to your questions didn?t clarify what kind of information is available from the state concerning 2009 H1N1.

You are correct about where to go for flu statistics in Alaska. The chart that showed 2009 H1N1 cases, hospitalizations and deaths is no longer a part of the state?s report; the Influenza Surveillance page does not replace it, but is in fact where that chart once appeared.

The changes you?ve seen on this report reflect those made by the CDC and were made and are maintained by epidemiology.

As you mentioned, you can access that report via www.pandemicflu.gov or www.epi.alaska.gov/id/influenza/influenza.jsp.

That said, it?s still possible to determine hospitalization trends for influenza-related illness by looking at several bar graphs. One shows total numbers and another shows the data by age group.

For regional activity, go to the table of rapid-test results for influenza A, B and A/B. Not all influenza A viruses are H1N1 viruses, but the numbers can still give you a sense of the incidence of flu in various parts of the state. If you click below that table, a bar graph covers the same data by age group.

This might be especially useful for you since you might have a higher risk of getting seasonal flu than H1n1.

Though we don?t update the surveillance report here in the public information office, we do help people in the media access and understand the data so they can accurately report what?s going on in their communities.

I hope this note is of some help to you. I?ve also sent your concerns to people in epidemiology so that they understand the kind of information our Web users want.

Thanks again for contacting the department. If you want to talk to me in person about H1N1 or the information on the pandemic flu Web site, give me a call or send me your phone number so I can call you.

My best to you,

Dxxxxxx Sxxxxx

updated information:

Of the information provided by Alaska DHSS, I think this is the only truly indicative data.

Updated counts show 1 new death (in the 25 to 49 age group) and increasing cases in the most populous areas (Southcentral and Gulf).

Re: Alaska - confirmed 11/26: hospitalized decreasing, 10 deaths-none new

In a phone conversation this morning with an AK DHSS influenza help person, they mentioned that if the vaccine supply vs. vaccine demand continues as is, they may allow anyone who wants a vaccine to get one - within about 2 weeks.

Man's flu death brings total to 11

Last Modified: December 5th, 2009 12:33 AM

Alaska had its 11th reported flu death of the year last week. A middle-aged man from Kodiak died last Saturday at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage of complications from the flu, the state Health and Social Services Department reported Thursday.

It was most likely swine flu, but he wasn't tested for the specific type of flu, said health department spokesman Greg Wilkinson.

The state health department is not aware of any underlying health conditions that might have contributed to the man's death. In most other Alaska swine flu deaths, the victims did have other health problems.

Week 52:

ILI and hospitalizations for P&I up

"In Alaska, the percentage of influenza-like-illness (ILI) visits to sentinel providers for the week ending January 2, 2010 was 3.8%. Nationally, the percentage of ILI visits to sentinel providers for the week ending January 2, 2010 was 2.4%. This percentage was above the national baseline of 2.3%."

Re: Alaska - Week 52

THere is another ILI-type bug in AK at the moment. I don't know what it is, just hearing lots of complaints. It's probably the latest version of what happens when everyone stays inside because it's so cold.

Today I heard a new fact that may explain unusual disease epidemology here:

" If New York City had the same population density as Alaska, only 16 people would be living in Manhattan" :)

Re: Alaska - confirmed 1/12: ILI hospitalized increasing, no new deaths

Re: Alaska - confirmed 1/12: ILI hospitalized increasing, no new deaths

There is an increase in hospitalizations for ILI, but no new deaths. It may be due to the intergenerational mixing during the holidays. Hoopefully it won't be repeating the late January/February waves seen in 1957 H2N2.
