Russell Co. man dies from swine flu

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - The Alabama Department of Public Health confirms a Russell County man died of H1N1 -- otherwise known as the swine flu virus.

Health officials tell us this is the 5th death related to H1NI in the state.

Russell County man dies from swine flu

A Russell County has died of the H1N1 influenza, the Alabama Department of Public Health has confirmed.

The man, who was in his 40s, is the fifth Alabama resident who has died from the virus, said Jim McVay, director of health promotion and chronic disease with the state health department. His office was told of the death Tuesday.

A Jefferson County man in his 50s was the first Alabama swine flu death, McVay said. He died about a month ago.

The second was three weeks ago and was a Montgomery child under 2 years old.

The third was a Jackson County elementary school student. The fourth was a Troy University student from Dothan, McVay said.

The H1N1 virus is dominant in Alabama, and composes more than 99 percent of circulating influenza viruses. On July 25, less than 1 percent of people with the virus were in doctors offices. By Aug. 29, that number had climbed to 8 percent, McVay said.
