Alabama 3rd grader dies from flu
[FONT="]An Alabama elementary student died Tuesday night from the flu, according to school officials.
Pike Road Superintendent Dr. Charles Ledbetter said Zainab Momin was a third grader at the school.[/FONT]
[FONT="]Zainab had been home from school since Tuesday due to a high fever and flu-like symptoms. She was taken to the hospital Tuesday night where she died.[/FONT]
[FONT="]"We ask you to keep the Momin family in your thoughts and prayers, and also to keep the Pike Road Schools family in your thoughts and prayers," Ledbetter said.[/FONT]
[FONT="]More than 20 pediatric deaths due to flu have been reported nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control, with high influenza activity reported in 26 states, including Alabama.[/FONT]
[FONT="]In a statement, the Alabama Department of Public Health said it had been notified as a pediatric death related to flu but said the investigation is early and it could not provide details on individual cases.[/FONT]
[FONT="]Last week, Gov. Kay Ivey declared a State Public Health Emergency in response to the crisis presented by the flu. The move came after several schools were forced to close due to the flu, and hospitals struggled to meet the high volume of patients.[/FONT]
