Zainab had been home from school since Tuesday due to a high fever and flu-like symptoms. She was taken to the hospital Tuesday night where she died.

"We ask you to keep the Momin family in your thoughts and prayers, and also to keep the Pike Road Schools family in your thoughts and prayers," Ledbetter said.

More than 20 pediatric deaths due to flu have been reported nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control, with high influenza activity reported in 26 states, including Alabama.

Influenza (flu) activity levels are increasing across the state of Alabama. The flu is a very contagious respiratory illness and the best preventive measure for influenza illness remains the flu vaccine. The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) has been notified of a possible pediatric death related to influenza. The investigation is early and ADPH does not provide details on individual cases. ADPH will be conducting flu shot clinics statewide. Vaccine is available for both children and adults and there will be no charge for the vaccination during these Influenza Vaccination Clinics.

A list of locations, dates and times can be found at alabamapublichealth.gov/immunization. Due to impending weather conditions, we may be forced to reschedule these, so please call the numbers located within the Influenza Clinic Schedule found at alabamapublichealth.gov/immunization.

Some of the symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, headache, muscle aches, and extreme fatigue.

Preventive measures include:

Get flu vaccine, it is not too late
Stay at home when ill
Cover your cough and sneeze
Wash hands
Clean and disinfect

Dr. Wes Stubblefield, President of the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, stated, "I have never seen a flu season this serious. Pediatricians are alarmed about the severity of recent cases and I urge families to be vaccinated against influenza as well as follow the advice of their physicians regarding any treatment measures, including antivirals." Antiviral medication should be considered to reduce the severity of influenza. Dr. Karen Landers, pediatrician with ADPH, states, ?While much of the information for antiviral use has been for high risk patients, antiviral medication can be prescribed early in the course of the illness in otherwise healthy persons as determined by the clinical judgment of the healthcare provider. The medication works best when given within the first 24-48 hours of symptom onset.?

ALEXANDRIA, Ala. ? Patients and employees won't be walking through the doors at Alexandria Family Dentistry for at least a little while.

[h=2]Flu believed to have played role in four local deaths[/h] While state health officials and local medical care providers have not released news of any recent Tallapoosa County deaths where the flu has been the confirmed cause, it is believed that the virus has played a role in at least four local deaths.

The most recent cases are a 65-year-old Dadeville woman and her 50-year-old daughter. The daughter died at home Jan. 18, while the mother passed two days later at East Alabama Medical Center, a source close to the family confirmed. While both had other health issues, both had the flu at the time of their passing.

A 53-year-old man and a 92-year-old woman also passed and at the time of their death both were showing flu-like symptoms. In addition to having contracted influenza, they too had other medical issues.

?We are aware that influenza-like illness activity is increased in seven of the eight public health districts,? said Alabama?s Acting Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris. ?We have also had confirmed influenza outbreaks reported at this time. Alabama recently reported ?widespread? geographic spread to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.?

Harris said that confirmation of the cause of death takes some time and starts with the reporting process.

?The Alabama Department of Public Health has been notified of both adult and pediatric deaths suspected to be flu-related,? Harris said. ?After those reports come in, our epidemiologists work to confirm the cause of death. They have to have a positive test or other information that would confirm that the virus was the sole cause of death. That process takes a little time. At this point in the process, none of these cases have been confirmed as being influenza-related.?
