More than 300,000 birds to be killed after avian flu found at Alabama farms

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — After confirming the presence of highly pathogenic avian flu in a flock of chickens, nearly 48,000 birds were killed at a north Alabama farm, state agriculture officials said.

A Marshall County commercial pullet farm — one that raises chicks from hatching until they are ready to produce eggs when they are moved to a laying barn — was placed under quarantine after samples were confirmed positive for HPAI, the Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries announced Friday.....

More than 344,000 birds killed in Alabama to stop spread of Avian flu

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBMA) — More than 344,000 birds were killed in Alabama due to the confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the animals.

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) and USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) said 47,900 birds on a pullet farm in Marshall County were depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease.

ADAI said all poultry within a 10-kilometer radius (6.2 miles) of the site are being tested and monitored. Currently, no other flocks have experienced an increase in mortality....

State veterinarian provides update on avian influenza outbreaks, clean up process

In-state, out-of-state, and federal resources have been utilized since avian influenza outbreaks were identified at a commercial pullet farm in Marshall County and a commercial upland gamebird farm in Chilton County in early November.

"Many, many people are working very hard to speed this up," said Dr. Tony Frazier, Alabama State Veterinarian. "On the depopulation, for the scale that we've had for both of these premises, it takes enormous resources. Both personnel and equipment. It takes lots of water. It's a bigger scale than what most folks realize and understand."

Frazier said they are on schedule, and possibly ahead of schedule in the process.

"Both of the farms have been appropriately and humanely depopulated at this point," said Frazier.

In total, there were more than 344,000 birds at the two farms.

Frazier explained they are using various disposal methods to ensure the virus is denatured, such as large-scale composting in Marshall County. Composting isn't a new concept but Frazier said this is the first time the ADAI is using it on this scale...

Thousands of chickens killed in central Alabama following discovery of bird flu in 2 counties

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) — Two cases of bird flu have been found in Alabama, resulting in the killing of thousands of chickens to contain the spread of the disease, the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries reported Monday.

Specifically, the cases were found in a commercial broiler farm in Cullman County, as well as a flock in a backyard in Pickens County.

According to the ADAI, samples from the flocks were tested at the Alabama State Diagnostic Laboratory in Auburn. Representatives with the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service are working with state animal health officials for a “joint incident response and action plan.”

As part of the response, the affected areas were quarantined and all chickens in those areas– approximately 116,000 in Cullman County and 70 in Pickens County– were put down, or “depopulated” as the ADAI stated, in order to stop the spread of the disease. Any and all poultry within six miles of the Cullman site are now being tested and monitored for bird flu symptoms.
