BRK: Air New Zealand flight from Japan quarantined. 60 passengers have started displaying flu-like symptoms.

A major health response is under way after an Air New Zealand plane landed at Auckland Airport with children with flu-like symptoms on-board.

A group of 60 passengers arrived into Auckland off NZ90 from Narita, Tokyo, this morning with the symptoms.

Air New Zealand is following public health procedures and has advised the Auckland Regional Public Health Service.

The Boeing 777-200 has 274 passengers on-board, and no-one has been allowed to exit the aircraft.

Ambulance communications said a quarantine area has been set up on the aircraft.

Two crews are on the plane and are wearing personal protective gear.

A witness at the scene said the Manukau District Health Board workers are wearing boiler suits and face masks and are assembled by the new police station next to the domestic terminal with Ambulance.

Ambulance services are also set up to transport passengers if required. :tiphat:

One person, who tweeted that they have been on-board the plane for 30 minutes and claimsauthorities are "stuffing about".

"Two crews are on the plane. We haven't opened the doors yet."
Meanwhile, an influenza epidemic is spreading across Japan, doubling the number of cases per hospital, The Mainichi Daily News reported.
Over 90% of the cases are due to the Hong Kong influenza A virus subtype H3N2, the report said.

Google flu trends also shows that the virus is peaking in Japan.

The "Hong Kong Flu" pandemic of 1968 and 1969, caused by a strain of H3N2, killed an estimated one million people worldwide.:tiphat:http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/health-scare-auckland-airport-4717991

Medical staff are on board an Air New Zealand plane from Japan which landed this morning at Auckland International Airport with 73 passengers suffering flu-like symptoms.
The medics are assessing the passengers to decide how they will be treated.
The plane landed from Tokyo at 9.20am and St John ambulance staff were alerted by Aviation Security Services.
A St John ambulance spokesman said two crews were on the aircraft wearing protective gear while they carried out the assessments. All 274 passengers are remaining on board while that is done.
Initial reports said the sick passengers were New Zealand children returning home from a school trip, but the St John spokesman said that had not been verified.
Further medical staff and several ambulances are on standby at the airport.
The spokesman said Aviation Security Services staff were working to identify two safe, well-ventilated areas at the airport where passengers could be taken. If passengers needed to be moved through crowds, that would also be done with caution.
Large numbers of masks were being taken to the airport for passengers.
If large numbers of passengers needed to be taken to hospital from the airport, it was likely a bus would be used to move them.
An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said they were following public health procedures and had advised the Auckland Regional Public Health Service.
A Counties Manukau District Health Board manager said all hospitals were "contingency planning" in case they were required to take passengers although would not give details of what those plans were.
Japan is currently experiencing a major flu epidemic.
News agencies report that by February 5, more than 2.1 million people in Japan had the flu. That had jumped by 380,000 cases on the previous week.
The number of people seeking medical treatment exceeded that during the peak of the swine flu outbreak in 2009, and authorities are warning the current epidemic has yet to peak.
The data shows that most patients tested were found to have been infected by the A strain of the virus, known in Japan as the "Hong Kong" strain.

A Counties Manukau District Health Board manager said all hospitals were "contingency planning" in case they were required to take passengers although would not give details of what those plans were.

...FLU EPIDEMIC BIGGER THAN SWINE FLU

Japan is currently experiencing a major flu epidemic.
News agencies report that by February 5, more than 2.1 million people in Japan had the flu. That had jumped by 380,000 cases on the previous week.
The number of people seeking medical treatment exceeded that during the peak of the swine flu outbreak in 2009, and authorities are warning the current epidemic has yet to peak.
The data shows that most patients tested were found to have been infected by the A strain of the virus, known in Japan as the "Hong Kong" strain.
Air NZ spokeswoman Marie Hosking said they were not planning any increased checks or screening measures for other passengers coming from Japan.
She said it was not yet confirmed that today's passengers were suffering from the flu.
Any planning would be left in the hands of Auckland public health officials.
There are no more inbound flights from Japan today. :tiphat:http://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/local-news/6407719/Suspected-flu-outbreak-on-plane

Health Minister Tony Ryall said it was unlikely the passengers had contracted anything worse than normal seasonal flu.

"We've been briefed on the situation, and advised that it is Japan's flu season, and there are no reports of new strains of flu there. We're keeping a watching brief but have been told there's nothing to suggest it's anything other than seasonal flu."

A major health response is under way after an Air New Zealand plane landed at Auckland Airport with children with flu-like symptoms on-board.
The alarm was raised when a group of 73 children arrived into Auckland off NZ90 from Narita, Tokyo, at 9.20am this morning with the symptoms.
Air New Zealand is following public health procedures and has advised the Auckland Regional Public Health Service.

The Boeing 777-200 had 274 passengers on-board.
Five St John vehicles arrived at the scene to assist passengers.
ONE News reporter Stephen Smith said unaffected passengers are now off the plane and are going through customs. They are still dealing with affected passengers.

Smith said the group of 90 children were on a student-exchange and were heading to Tauranga.
Chris Auld, who earlier tweeted that he was on-board the plane, said there was a "reasonable job of communication. Looks like we can now clear customs."

"Pax being given information sheet. If immunised probably all ok. Now able to leave."
Auld said it was "pretty routine" and he thought the crew handled the situation really well.
Sarah Lee earlier commented on TV ONE's Facebook page that her friend is on the plane and they "haven't been told anything".
Ambulance services said there was a large number of Japanese and Canadians on-board.
The Ministry of Health said they are aware of the event and are monitoring the response.

Minister of Health Tony Ryall is playing down the incident.
"We've been briefed on the situation, and advised that it is Japan's flu season, there are no reports of new strains of flu there, Ryall said.
"We're keeping a watching brief but been told there's nothing to suggest it's anything other than seasonal flu."

LATEST: People have begun disembarking from an Air New Zealand plane that landed this morning at Auckland International Airport from Japan with 73 passengers suffering flu-like symptoms.
Medics have been assessing the passengers to decide how they will be treated and the city's hospitals are on standby for an influx of patients.
Japanese woman Mari Yoshikawa was the first passenger from the plane to come through Customs and into the main terminal.
She said she was OK and that only two students on the plane had been sick. She said the two had been vomiting. :tiphat:http://www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily-news/news/national/6407820/Air-NZ-flight-flu-incident
