After malaria, typhoid cases in city on rise, touch 10-yr high

According to data provided by the civic body, 839 patients of typhoid have been treated to date in 2011 with the addition of five more patients on Friday.
In the last ten years, average cases of typhoid registered in the city stand at 395 per annum. Going by this data, the number of typhoid cases has doubled when compared with the average of the last ten years. Last year, the city had registered 778 patients of typhoid.

Ahmedabad: Of late, health officials of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) are having sleepless nights due to spread of waterborne diseases in the city. Apart from a surge in the number of cases of jaundice, the number of lives claimed by Hepatitis-E has forced civic officials and the state government to take effective measures to contain the diseases.
In the current year, the death toll due to jaundice reached 23 till July, which is higher than the aggregate of the period from 2002 to 2011, which is 20.
Generally, jaundice cases see a rise during summer and start subsiding with the arrival of rains. However, number of cases does not seem to be coming down much this year. The city registered 702 cases of jaundice in July, while the number of jaundice cases stood at 857 and 814 in June and May respectively. The total number of cases of jaundice reached 4,932 in July compared to average 2,842 cases in last nine years.
