Ahmedabad:
According to data provided by the civic body, 839 patients of typhoid have been treated to date in 2011 with the addition of five more patients on Friday.

In the last ten years, average cases of typhoid registered in the city stand at 395 per annum. Going by this data, the number of typhoid cases has doubled when compared with the average of the last ten years. Last year, the city had registered 778 patients of typhoid.

In 7 months, deadly jaundice claims 23 lives in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: Of late, health officials of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) are having sleepless nights due to spread of waterborne diseases in the city. Apart from a surge in the number of cases of jaundice, the number of lives claimed by Hepatitis-E has forced civic officials and the state government to take effective measures to contain the diseases.

In the current year, the death toll due to jaundice reached 23 till July, which is higher than the aggregate of the period from 2002 to 2011, which is 20.

Generally, jaundice cases see a rise during summer and start subsiding with the arrival of rains. However, number of cases does not seem to be coming down much this year. The city registered 702 cases of jaundice in July, while the number of jaundice cases stood at 857 and 814 in June and May respectively. The total number of cases of jaundice reached 4,932 in July compared to average 2,842 cases in last nine years.

In September, the hospital has registered 29 cases of malaria and 11 cases in falciparum so far. In July, 114 cases of vector-borne diseases like malaria, falciparum and dengue were reported. Among these, there were two deaths. Similarly, in August, there were 355 cases of vector-borne diseases and 11 deaths were reported.

Mosquito bites get deadlier

AHMEDABAD: Alarmed with detection of 17 new cases each of dengue, malaria and falciparum in a single day in the city, civic authorities on Saturday pressed more teams into action to put a curb on sites breeding mosquitoes and prevent spread of the diseases.

In the past fortnight, the city municipal hospitals have recorded nearly 400 cases of dengue, 300 cases of falciparum and 250 cases of malaria.

One more kid dies of dengue in Ahmedabad

While festival of lights is round the corner and Amdavadis are already basking in the festive mood, the city is still struggling to deal with the deadly vector-borne diseases that have already reached menacing proportions with many people admitted in hospitals for the deadly diseases. Many citizens are still fighting diseases like dengue, malaria and falciparum. The city witnessed a whopping rise of more than 50 cases each of the diseases such as dengue, malaria and falciparum in the last three days.

On Saturday, one more child, Shifa Naz (5), succumb to dengue at private hospital in Paldi, while 17 more cases from Civil Hospital were also reported on the same day.

Deadly dengue: Private hospitals too record alarming rise in cases

AHMEDABAD: The attack of dengue and malaria in the city may be more severe than what is reflected by the figures given out by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The situation is grave as the civic body has given data of cases in municipal hospitals only. Private hospitals too are recording high incidence of dengue, malaria and falciparum cases in the past fortnight.

Dr Bhavini Shah, director of pathology laboratory with wide network of sample collection from private hospitals in city, said that dengue cases have spiked in October. "In the past 15 days, 60-odd blood samples have been found positive to dengue," Dr Shah said. The number of malaria positive cases was 75 of which 50 per cent were falciparum malaria.

Falciparum claims 44 lives since January in Ahmedabad

Two more people died of falciparum on Monday, taking the number of deaths from the deadly disease to 44 in Ahmedabad since January.

A youth and a 60-year-old woman were the latest victims of this disease caused by mosquito bite. Victims have been identified as 20-year-old Nirav Ratanpal, a resident of Isanpur, and Paliben Waghela, a 60-year-old woman, a resident of Shahpur. While Nirav died at LG Hospital, Paliben took her last breath at VS Hospital.

158 dengue cases were recorded this month and one death was reported due to the disease. Forty four lives have been lost to falciparum since January and 12 to malaria. Similarly, since January, 1,388 falciparum and 6,322 malaria cases have been registered.

One more malaria death in Ahmedabad, toll rises to three

AHMEDABAD: One more person died of malaria in the city on Tuesday, taking the death toll to three in October alone.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials said a 50-year-old man, who stayed in Gomtipur, died during treatment at an AMC-run hospital after being tested positive of malaria.

Nine new cases of malaria were reported in the city taking the total number of malaria patients to 257 in the first 17 days of October. Roughly 355 cases of falciparum - 25 cases on Tuesday alone - were reported at AMC-run hospitals in the city.

That is not the end of story. According to AMC officials, nine fresh cases of dengue were reported on Monday at various hospitals, taking the total number to 410 in October. This data does not include over 30 patients admitted in private hospitals.

AMC intensifies anti-malaria drive; death toll touches 16

AHMEDABAD: The burgeoning population of mosquitoes in the city has kept the municipal authorities on tenterhooks. Despite several measures and claims made by officers of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the deadly sting continues to take its toll. The number of malaria deaths has now risen to 16 this month.

On Monday, Raipur-resident Dahya Sharma, 35, succumbed to falciparum in VS Hospital. Sharma was the 16{+t} {+h} victim of malaria and other fatal fevers in the city this month. Since August 1, the city has recorded more than 65 deaths due to malaria, falciparum and dengue.

Diseases in Ahmedabad at a three-year high

According to figures of the health report, jaundice cases registered in municipal hospitals in September this year alone were 428, which reduced to 405 in October. Whereas, in October 2009, 177 jaundice cases were registered against 283 in October 2010. However, this year the figures crossed 400, a rise of 43% over last year.

Similarly, the cases of malaria have risen at a whopping rate of 81% since two years ago.

While in October 2009, number of malaria cases registered was 448, which later rose to 690 in October 2010. This year the figure was a whopping 815 cases! Moreover, cases of falciparum which were 146 and 378 in October 2009 and 2010, respectively, which steeped to 686 cases in October 2011, an 81% higher than the previous year!

Moreover, the cases of typhoid which were 29 in October 2009 and 96 in October 2010 reached 132 in October 2011.
