Deputy Agricultural Policy Minister Petro Verbytskyi announced this to journalists.

According to him, the risk of bird flu spreading to the territory of Ukraine increases in the October-November period, when mass migration of migratory birds through Ukrainian territory takes place.

Verbytskyi said that a set of measures that the Agricultural Policy Ministry will recommend for reducing the risk of appearance and spread of bird flu in Ukraine is presently being considered.

According to him, these measures include restriction and ending of the hunting season and recommendation that members of the public not allow domestic birds out of enclosures during the period of mass migration of birds.

Verbytskyi also said that the issue of vaccination against bird flu would be considered and noted the need to organize mass production of vaccines in Ukraine and determine the regions where vaccination will take place.

According to him, the issue of allocation of UAH 10 million from the Reserve Fund of the Cabinet of Ministers for financing mass production of vaccines will be considered at the next meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.

At the same time, he said that this amount is lower than the amount that could be spent on measures for eliminating bird flu.

Verbytskyi also said that the optimum period for vaccination is October.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the forestry administration of the Poltava region has suspended permission to hunt migratory wild birds in the Poltava region from September 18 because of the discovery of the bird-flu virus in the region.

The State Department of Veterinary Medicine has said that the bird-flu virus that was found in the Poltava region is not dangerous and that the H5N1 strain of the bird-flu virus is the dangerous one.

Ukraine intends to launch mass production of vaccines against bird flu in 2006. Its production started at the Sumy biological plant in late August.

The Emergency Situations Ministry recently stated its readiness to combat bird flu if it spreads to Ukraine this autumn. <!-- _Info Author_Miroshnychenko_Viktoria _Miroshnychenko_Viktoria Topic_Agriculture Topic_Events Topic_Cabinet_of_Ministers Topic_Events _Agriculture _Events _Cabinet_of_Ministers _Events -->
