Pandemic preparing
Amber Kispert Woodbury Bulletin
Published Tuesday, December 23, 2008

The city of Afton and its officials are ready for anything, now that the Afton City Council has approved, at the Dec. 16 meeting, the Public Health Emergency Plan, drafted by the Community Health Emergency Preparedness Committee, as part of the City of Afton Emergency Operations Plan.

The purpose of the Public Health Emergency Plan is to address a public health emergency, if one should arise, such as a flue pandemic.

The plan outlines the concept of operations, the phases of avian and influenza pandemics, the delivery of essential services in a pandemic flu event and personal protection planning.

The Afton City Council also approved the use of Virtual Private Network software, which would enable staff to access their city e-mail from home in the event of a pandemic.

The ability of staff to access their e-mail is essential during a pandemic.

It would allow for greater business continuity and coordination and communication with Washington County, which is vital for the dissemination of information to residents and even for the continuation of some essential services.
