Togo Meningitis Deaths Rise to 70, More Than 860 Cases Reported

The death toll from a meningitis outbreak in Togo rose to 70 as the government attempted to halt the disease by vaccinating more than 233,000 people, a health official said.
?Despite the massive vaccination program cases reported climbed to more than 800 and unfortunately 70 people were killed from 29 two weeks ago, ? Ministry of Health official Tsidi Agbeko Tamekloe said in comments broadcast on Lome-based Radio Victoire.
The outbreak in the West African nation was first reported in the Savannah region, 500 kilometers (310 miles) north of the capital, Lome. It then spread to the Central, Kara and Maritime regions.

MRC Unit The Gambia and WHO join forces to deal with Meningitis outbreak in Ghana

At the center of the meningitis outbreak response in Ghana, the Medical Research Council Unit, The Gambia (MRCG) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) join forces. Official figures as of 17th Feb 2016, from the Ghana?s Health Ministry indicate that at least 86 people have died with 637 cases in the recent outbreak of a strain of pneumococcal meningitis in Ghana.

With Togo's meningitis epidemic spreading rapidly, Plan International is distributing medical supplies to support the country's health system.

As the meningitis outbreak in Togo continues to spread at an alarming rate, health centres are struggling to cope with an increased demand for treatment.

So far, 1,029 cases of meningitis have been reported, with 88 deaths.

Community awareness is key to tackling the meningitis outbreak in Togo, which has affected over 1,200 people and killed 102 so far.

Plan International and volunteers have been educating children and communities so they know how to recognise the signs of meningitis, what to do if they contract meningitis and where to seek care.
