Health-Congo: Eight killed in outbreak
Epidemic Poliomyelitis-Congo - An outbreak related to polio, which has been raging for nearly two weeks in Pointe-Noire, the main economic and industrial center of Congo has already eight dead and twenty cases were reported, announced Tuesday the Congolese Ministry of Health.
'Patients admitted to hospitals exhibit symptoms of influenza. They also have paralysis starting with the legs and then reach the members', said Director General of Health, Prof. Alexis Dockekias Elect.
'This epidemic is related to polio that has raged, with the difference that this time, the disease affects teenagers and adults, unlike polio, which mainly affects young children,' said Prof. Elect Dockekias.
According to the DG of Health, the disease is probably caused by a virus that invades the digestive tract.
The Congolese Ministry of Health has already taken the World Health Organization (WHO), in accordance with the provisions concerning international health epidemics.
However, Professor Elect Dockekias urged the public not to panic but to observe basic hygiene measures in consuming only water drinking.
'Water should be boiled before consumption, one can also use the products recommended by health services to citizens,' said the DG of Health.
Due to the lack of drinking water in some districts of Pointe-Noire, especially in the periphery, people can consume water from wells and boreholes some poorly maintained that, when the rainy season, are hotbeds multiplication of many parasites, bacteria and viruses that cause epidemics.
