AFHSC 2010-11 Season: Weeks 43-21

Re: AFHSC 2010-11 Season: Weeks 43-9

Re: AFHSC 2010-11 Season: Weeks 43-9

74.3% were vaccinated. I really don't know how to interpret this. If nearly 75% of flu cases were vaccinated and the vaccination rate was 100%, then the vaccine failure rate would be 75%, right? If the vaccination rate was 50%, but 75% of cases were vaccinated, just for the sake of argument, wouldn't that suggest that the vaccinated population was more likely to get influenza?

On the other hand, if the vaccination rate was 75% and the percent of flu patients that were vaccinated was also 75%, wouldn't that mean that there was a near 100% failure rate? I realize that there would need to be a statistically significant population to do the analysis, but in layman's terms, it appears that for the AFHSC, the vaccine did little to prevent flu.

I suppose the flaw with my point is that we are dealing with three strains. So, the vaccine could have a much higher failure rate for one strain, but be very effective for the other two.

MHS Influenza Surveillance Report Week 10 (Week Ending March 12, 2011)
* Influenza-like illness (ILI) and pneumonia and influenza (P&I) incidence rates decreased this week for almost all regions and vaccination groups.
* The percent of all outpatient visits due to ILI decreased this week for all groups except PACOM beneficiaries. Beneficiary populations remained at or above baseline, while service member percents remained below baseline. All groups remained at or below previous season percents.
* The percent of all outpatient visits due to P&I continued to decrease for all groups. Percents were below baseline and at or below previous season percents.
* Due to date feeds delays, reportable medical event (RME) data are not available for this week. As of last week, there were 414 RME influenza cases among service members (74.3% were vaccinated) reported since week 40. An additional 1821 cases were reported among other beneficiaries.

DOD Influenza Surveillance Report (15 Mar 2011)
The number of samples collected and the percent positive for influenza has decreased for the last three weeks

The percent of all outpatient visits due to influenza-like-illness (ILI) decreased this week for all regions

Active duty immunization coverage within the DoD is at 96%

Type 4 adenovirus remains the predominant cause of febrile respiratory illness at most recruit training centers, with the exception of MCRD Paris Island where type 14 adenovirus is predominant

There has been a decrease in A/H1 co-circulation with A/H3 and B influenza viruses

There continues to be good agreement between current vaccine components and circulating influenza vaccine strains

No evidence of antiviral resistance (via genetic markers) in all analyzed A/H1 samples

decrease is within the average 8-year trend.

Naval Health Research Center
Continue to see all influenza types with steady percent positive samples. A/H1 predominates among influenza positive recruits.
Type 4 adenovirus remains the predominant cause of febrile respiratory illness at most recruit training centers.
Type 14 adenovirus is also present at MCRD Parris Island and MRCD San Diego.

DoD Overseas Laboratories:
Continue to see low levels of circulating ILI activity among surveillance sites in West Africa (GVF, Univ. of Buea, USAMRU-K).
Moderate influenza activity in East Africa, predominately influenza B and A/H1 (USAMRU-K).
Increased ILI activity at surveillance sites in South America with low numbers of specimens positive for influenza (NAMRU-6).
