1st polio case reported in Afghanistan in 2019

[FONT=&quot]Kabul: Afghanistan’s first polio case in 2019 was reported in Kandahar province, where a 22-month-old girl from Spin Boldak district was infected by the poliovirus.[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]According to a statement the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Ferozuddin Feroz said, “this case indicates that the poliovirus is still transmitting in Kandahar and the South region. This child’s life is now changed forever. It is really sad that she will never walk properly again, therefore I call upon all of you, our Muslim parents, caregivers, community elders and health workers to work together to protect our innocent children against this disease and eradicate polio in our country.”[/FONT]

No wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case was reported in the past week.

The total number of WPV1 cases in 2018 was 21.

Five WPV1-positive environmental samples were reported this week: four from Kandahar province, one from Lashkargah district, Hilmand province.

Samples were collected on 6 January 2019.

KABUL, May 29 (Xinhua) -- A fresh positive polio case were detected in Afghanistan's eastern province of Kunar, bringing the number of confirmed cases of poliovirus to eight since January this year, a public health official said Wednesday.

"A new polio case has been reported from Watapur district of Kunar Province which permanently paralyzed a three-month-old boy," Wahidullah Mayar, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health, tweeted.

The latest case is the first case from the eastern Afghan region this year and the rest of seven cases have been reported from southern provinces, he added...

In Afghanistan, conspiracy theories fuel polio outbreak

KANDAHAR (AFGHANISTAN): Two-year-old Farid should have been vaccinated against polio, but his family ? like many in rural Afghanistan ? believed the conspiracy theories and refused to have him inoculated.
He contracted the virus, and now faces a crippling life sentence battling a potentially fatal disease with no cure.
"When the doctors told me he had polio, I felt remorse. I had believed people who told me the polio vaccine was a plot against Muslims," Abdul Wali, the child's uncle and head of the family, told AFP of his decision to rule against inoculation.
In the past decade, the numbers of people infected with polio declined from a high of 80 in 2011 to 13 in 2016. But last year there was a jump in new cases with 21 reported across the country.
Polio immunisation is compulsory in Afghanistan, but distrust of vaccines is rife, and the programmes are difficult to enforce particularly in rural regions.
The Taliban, having previously restricted access to such programmes for residents living in areas it controls, says it has instituted a total ban on inoculations.
Militants and religious leaders tell the community that vaccines are a Western conspiracy aiming to sterilise Muslim children, or that such programmes are an elaborate cover for Western or Afghan government spies...

KABUL: The number of polio positive cases in Afghanistan has
reached to 10th so far in 2019, where forth of it only reported from Uruzgan province with a new one detected in Mehr Abad area of Tirinkot, the provincial capital.

According to Ministry of Public Health, a 21-month-old girl is
permanently paralyzed in Tirinkot, making it 10th cases of polio in Afghanistan so far.

Health ministry in a statement said that last week another
polio case reported from Trinkot, which paralyzed a 30-month-old boy.

House-to-house polio campaigns were banned in this area
since May 2018. This means children under five living in the area have not been vaccinated and protected from the virus since then, the ministry added.

Only one out of 10 polio cases were reported from Eastern
Kunar province while the rest have been reported from the southern region: 4- case in Urozgan, 3 -in Helmand and 2- case in Kandahar...

KABUL: Two new polio cases have surfaced separately in
capital city of Tirinkot and Chora district of southern Uruzgan province, a statement from the relevant ministry said Sunday.

A 30-month-old child and another six-month-old infant were
permanently paralyzed as a result of the polio virus.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Public
Health (MoPH), the total number of polio cases in 2019 reached 15 with the two new cases, saying all of these cases had been reported from inaccessible areas.

'Fourteen out of the 15 polio cases this year have been
reported from the southern region of Afghanistan,' the statement said, adding 'Seven positive cases came from Uruzgan, five from Helmand and two other from Kandahar.'

Only one out of 12 polio cases was reported from eastern
Kunar province while the rest happened in the southern zone...

KABUL, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- One fresh polio case had been detected in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province, a local newspaper reported on Monday.

"With this new case, the total number of polio cases in 2019 reaches to 22 in the country. The latest polio case has been reported from Kandahar city, capital of Kandahar province which permanently paralyzed an 18-month-old child," Daily Afghanistan-e-Ma reported.

KABUL: Officials in the Ministry of Public Health has said that two fresh positive cases of polio have been registered in southern Uruzgan and northern Baghlan provinces.

According to health officials the families of the polio affected children live in Dand-e-Ghori and Khas Uruzgan districts, and that the areas were out of government's control and deprived of medical facilities.

Dr. Abdul Qayum Khplwak, head of the medical institute for the southern part of Afghanistan said that one of the two children have been deprived of polio vaccination in Khas Urozgan district of the province...

...Over 24 positive polio cases have been recorded from the beginning of 2019. More than eight cases in Uruzgan, five in Helmand, four in Kandahar, two in Paktia and three other cases in Badghis, Nangarhar and Kunar provinces...
