KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan on Monday identified the country’s first case of coronavirus as reported cases outside China jump.

Ferozuddin Feroz, the minister of public health, told a press conference in Kabul one of three suspected cases had been confirmed in the Western province of Herat.

He announced a state of emergency in the province, which borders Iran where dozens of cases of the disease have been confirmed and eight people have died, the highest death toll outside of China, where the disease originated.

...A positive coronavirus case has been registered in the northern province of Samangan, officials at the Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday.

This is the first time that a coronavirus case was registered in north of Afghanistan.

“In the past 24 hours, a positive coronavirus, or Covid-19 case, has been registered in Samangan province, and it brings the total positive cases to 5,” said Wahidullah Mayar, a spokesman for Ministry of Public Health, adding that “four of the other cases are registered in Herat province.”...

“All the cases that are positive in Afghanistan have come from Iran,” according to a spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health.

Five new positive coronavirus cases have been reported in Afghanistan--4 in Herat and 1 in Daikundi- said Wahidullah Mayar, a spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health, "the total positive cases in Afghanistan is now up to 16.”

“In the past 12 hours, five positive coronavirus cases have been registered in Herat and Daikundi provinces, and it brings the total positive cases to 16,” said Mayar, adding that “10 are in Herat, three in Samangan, one in Balkh, one in Daikundi and one is in Kapisa province.”...

COVID-19: Over 100,000 Afghans return from Iran

KABUL, Afghanistan (AA): Since the outbreak of coronavirus in neighboring Iran, over 100,000 Afghans were deported or returned voluntarily to their war-ravaged country, the UN migration agency said on Wednesday.

In a fresh report, the International Organization of Migration noted that due to coronavirus transmission fears in Iran, spontaneous returns from Iran over the past week have reached new record weekly totals.

It said a total of 53,069 undocumented Afghans returned from Iran through the Milak (Nimroz) and Herat (Islam Qala) borders between March 8-14, representing a 171% increase...

The Afghanistan's Public Health Ministry on Friday reported two new confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections.

"Within the last 24 hours, two new COVID-19 cases were reported in western Herat province, bordering Iran. The latest cases, both of which were imported cases from Iran, have brought to 26 the total number of the affected people by infection disease, including 15 in Herat," Wahid Mayar, spokesman of the ministry, said in a statement.

All the 26 infections were imported cases from overseas...

Afghanistan reports 10 new cases of people with Covid-19

Afghanistan has reported 10 new coronavirus cases in last 24 hours raising the total cases to 34.

Two foreign diplomats are included. The health ministry said in a press conference in Kabul that the diplomats were infected by the coronavirus while abroad. They were not identified publicly.

He also asked authorities to quarantine the western city of Herat, which neighbours Iran and is the most affected city in the country. 18 of the 34 cases were found in Herat, and concerns are high, with thousands of Afghans crossing the border each day from Iran.

Authorities in Afghanistan on Sunday reported 10 additional confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, including two in the capital Kabul for the first time, taking the total to 34.

Health Minister Ferozuddin Feroz told a press conference that the 10 new cases nationwide – out of 97 tests – include two foreign diplomats based in Kabul, but declined to give more details.

Feroz demanded the government declare a complete lockdown in the frontline state of Herat bordering Iran, which has emerged as the epicenter behind the spread of virus in Afghanistan, with thousands of deportees entering on a daily basis...

A woman affected by the COVID-19 was killed in Afghanistan's western Herat province, bringing the number of death from the disease to two, the country's Public Health Ministry spokesman Wahidullah Mayar said Wednesday.

In talks with Xinhua, Mayar confirmed that the second victim was a 45-year old woman from Herat province...

Authorities in Afghanistan imposed day-time curfew Wednesday in three provinces bordering Iran in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The lockdown was implemented in Herat, Farah and Nimroz until further notice.

Health Ministry's spokesman Waheedullah Mayar told a news conference the virus has entered an epidemic phase in Afghanistan with maiden cases of local transmission confirmed.

...To stem the spread of COVID 19, the government has imposed a 21-day curfew in the capital of Kabul which came into effect Saturday, and the same measure was also imposed in three western cites of Herat, Farah and Zaranj days ago.
