Polio paralyzes child in Herat: positive case reported
By Fidel Rahmati
June 11, 2024

On Tuesday, June 11, the Information and Culture Department of the province in Herat announced that a five-year-old child in the village of “Qabr-e Mir” in the Koh-Zor district of this province had contracted polio.

The Department of Information and Culture identified the child as Sayed Gul and stated that he had been permanently paralyzed.

Officials cited the reason for this five-year-old child’s polio infection as his father’s refusal to vaccinate him against polio.

Previously, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported two positive cases of polio in 2024 in the provinces of Kunar and Nuristan...

ISLAMABAD —

A Taliban Health Ministry spokesman says Afghanistan has recorded no polio cases so far in 2024, contradicting reports of nine cases recorded by the World Health Organization.

"This year, we haven't had a positive case of poliovirus in the entire country," Sharafat Zaman, the Afghan Ministry of Public Health spokesperson, said in a video announcement ahead of a four-day polio vaccination campaign that began Monday.

However, the WHO-led Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has recorded nine paralytic polio cases in Afghanistan so far in 2024, including three reported this week from the southern province of Kandahar.

"The Afghan Ministry of Public Health has reported all the cases of wild poliovirus as per the IHR (International Health Regulations) protocols to WHO," Hamid Jafari, director of polio eradication for the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, which includes Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan, told VOA.

Jafari told VOA that the information is available weekly in the WHO polio analysis published online. Afghanistan did not detect a polio case this year until April. It recorded six cases in 2023...

Taliban Halts Polio Vaccination in Afghanistan: A Global Health Setback
The Taliban has suspended polio vaccination campaigns in Afghanistan, posing a significant challenge to global efforts to eradicate the disease. The WHO confirmed 18 cases this year in Afghanistan, with the majority in the south. Previously, August saw synchronized vaccination efforts with Pakistan. The recent suspension could impact polio eradication in both countries.

The Taliban has suspended polio vaccination campaigns in Afghanistan, the UN reported on Monday, further complicating efforts to eradicate the deadly and paralyzing disease worldwide.

Afghanistan, one of only two countries where polio remains endemic, faces increased risk with 18 polio cases confirmed this year, predominantly in the south. The suspension of the September immunization campaign came abruptly without an explanation and no comments from the Taliban administration...

Polio cases in Afghanistan rise by 283%, reports WHO
By Fidel Rahmati
December 4, 2024

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday reported a 283% increase in polio cases in Afghanistan. The organization expressed concern about the suspension of the house-to-house polio vaccination campaign.

The emergency committee highlighted that the rise in polio cases has been most prominent in southern Afghanistan, especially after the latter part of 2023.

The emergency meeting to address the surge in polio cases was held on November 6, 2024, and chaired by the WHO Director-General.

According to the WHO statement, the number of environmental samples testing positive for wild poliovirus type 1 in Afghanistan has risen to 84 in 2024, up from 62 in 2023.

The WHO added that after significant progress in house-to-house vaccination campaigns in the first half of 2024, Afghanistan has recently returned to conducting area-specific campaigns.

The WHO emergency committee expressed concern over the suspension of the house-to-house vaccination campaigns, stating that area-based campaigns cannot cover all children, especially young children and girls. This could lead to an increase in polio cases and its geographical spread...
