Afghanistan reported the first case of the poliovirus of 2023 as the health authorities detected it in Nangarhar province.

The first incidence of polio in Afghanistan since 2023 has been detected, according to the country’s Ministry of Health on Saturday.

According to reports, a four-year-old child has been identified as having polio sickness in the region, and up to two cases of the wild poliovirus have been found worldwide...​

Afghanistan reported the third case of the poliovirus of 2023 as the health authorities detected it in Nangarhar province.

A new polio case from the Nazyan district of Nangarhar province has also been reported, affecting a 30-month-old male child.

With this, there have been three confirmed polio cases in the nation so far this year, all of which are from the province of Nangarhar.

The ministry reported that the province is facing a high risk of poliovirus due to the lap also reporting some WPV1-positive environmental samples from the east region, particularly Nangarhar province...​

Afghanistan Reports 5th Polio Case in Nangarhar

United National Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Afghanistan has confirmed that five instances of polio have been detected in Afghanistan since a child under five was found to have the debilitating disease in the eastern Nangarhar province.

According to Kamal Shah Sayed, chief of the UNICEF Polio Eradication Programme in Afghanistan’s communications department, the case has been reported in the Nangarhar province’s Dur Baba region.

“The disease is feared to spread to other parts of the province, and efforts were underway to check it,” the official said.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Public Health announced the fourth polio case in the Besud district of Nangarhar province.

Kabul, Afghanistan (June 18, 2023) – With the start of warm weather, the spread of the polio virus has accelerated in Afghanistan, and a new case of the disease has recently been recorded in Nangarhar.

This new case of polio was reported from Dur Baba District of this province, and the affected child is a 6 year old girl.

Kamal Shah Sayed, the Communication Specialist of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Polio Eradication programme, states that summer is a conducive season for the transmission of the polio virus in children. There has been a surge in polio cases in Afghanistan.

He added that, unfortunately, another case of polio has been recorded in the Dur Baba District of Nangarhar, located in the eastern zone of the country. With this new case, the total number of polio cases has increased to five in the current year of 2023.

He says that the child infected with polio is a six year old girl and has paralysis for the rest of her life.

In the year 2023, thus far, a total of five cases of polio have been reported in the country, all of which are located in Nangarhar province.

The first incident was recorded in Bati Kot, the second in Kot, the third in Nazian, the fourth in Behsud, and the fifth in the Dur Baba district.
