One new case of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) was reported this week from Kama district, Nangarhar province. Onset of this latest case was 1 January 2018.

This is the first officially reported WPV1 case in Afghanistan in 2018, and highlights the challenges faced by the programme in the last few areas where the virus is still circulating, and the importance of identifying and vaccinating every last child.

2 positive polio cases detected in Kunar, Kandahar

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) on Friday said two positive polio cases have recently been registered in Kandahar and Kunar provinces.

A statement from MoPH received by Pajhwok Afghan News, said the cases were detected in Ghazi Abad district of Kunar and Shah Walikot district of Kandahar province...

.. The statement said that the cases were detected in families that always rejected anti-polio vaccination and never allowed any health volunteers to vaccinate their children...

...According to the MoPH, five cases of paralysis have been registered in Afghanistan this year.

Currently an anti-polio drive is ongoing countrywide and it would cover around a million children under five years of age...

KABUL, July 2 (Xinhua) -- A fresh infectious poliomyelitis case was detected in Afghanistan, bringing to nine the number of confirmed cases of polio virus since January this year, the Afghan Public Health Ministry said Monday.

"A new polio virus case was registered in Pir Mohammad village, Nad Ali district of southern Helmand province recently," the ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement, the paralyzed four-year-old boy had never been vaccinated, as the area his family lives in is behind the reach of health workers and polio vaccinators...

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) ? A fresh polio case was detected in Afghanistan?s southern province of Kandahar, bringing the total cases to seven in the country, an official said Friday.

?The virus affecting an 11-month-old girl named Subhani, was found in Zhuwando Hadiro area of Arghandab district a couple of days ago, after a previously detected one in the neighboring Helmand province in late June,? Abdul Shakoor Nasrat, who is in charge of Kandahar Immunity Vaccination Program, told Xinhua.

By the freshly found case, the polio cases reported in the country?s southern zone has reached seven; one in Helmand and the remaining six in Kandahar province, bringing the total cases to 10 countrywide, the official added...

Progress in eradicating polio worldwide has stalled because of difficulties vaccinating children amid insurgent violence, according to a frank review of the global effort to end the crippling virus.

While the virus has been rolled back over the past 30 years to only three countries, hopes of finally stamping it out in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria are so far thwarted by insecurity.

An 80-page external review commissioned for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative said cases in Afghanistan had more than doubled from last year as violence has worsened. The number of children beyond the reach of vaccinators because of Taliban or Islamic State group obstruction has jumped...
