New flu virus is no cause for alarm

JEDDAH ? A new type of flu virus called Adenovirus has hit Jeddah, but a doctor says that it is normal for a new strain to appear at this time of the year.
?It is a new virus for which we are treating two to three patients a day.
He said Jeddah often sees new strains because of the changes in climate. These new viruses are also prevalent because of the influx of Haj and Umrah pilgrims every year.
?This infection stays for one week and then goes away. However it doesn?t mean you don?t need proper medication. People should go to their doctor for a check-up,? he said The doctor said the symptoms are the same as that for the common flu, including coughing, sneezing, throat pain and congestion in the chest. However, this new virus can also infect the eyes causing redness and pain.
He said that the Ministry of Health should analyze any new strain, name it, and work out a treatment plan. This will help doctors in treating patients.
Every year 100,000 people get infected with new viral diseases. He said that the Ministry of Health should keep records of such viral infections. There are currently no statistics for infectious diseases, he said.
