About 5 % of H1N1 cases in Canada hospitalized: report

TORONTO -- The Public Health Agency of Canada says just over five per cent of people confirmed to have swine flu in this country have needed to be hospitalized.
In a swine flu update, the agency says only a quarter of the hospitalized people had an underlying medical condition, but it also acknowledges it only has that kind of information for 41 per cent of the cases.
As of Friday, there were 3,515 confirmed cases across the country; 182 of those people had been hospitalized and four died.
The report says the hospitalization number might be a bit out of date, because Manitoba hadn't reported an updated figure on Friday.
The median age for hospitalized cases -- the half-way point between the youngest and the oldest -- was 15 years old.
Another report, the agency's weekly FluWatch report, says 16 per cent of the people hospitalized were admitted to the intensive care unit.
FluWatch, which contains figures only up to June 6, says two of the hospitalized cases were pregnant women, both in their third trimester.
Children younger than 10 years of age were particularly affected, accounting for a third of the hospitalized cases.
