About 123 jail inmates in one housing unit are in quarantine after six inmates exhibited flu-like symptoms in the last two days, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Jail staff are trying to find out if any of the inmates have a swine flu virus, now officially called H1N1.

Nevada officials isolate inmates in response to prison swine flu cases

Several cases of swine flu in the Nevada prison system and in the Elko jail, as well as suspected cases in Washoe County Jail, have prompted corrections officials to tighten protocols to protect inmates and staff.

"So far, we've been very fortunate that we have not had a serious outbreak," said Howard Skolnik, director of the Nevada Department of Corrections. "Wish us luck because it's a confined environment, and if we get a serious problem, it could really escalate on us."

On Friday, the Washoe County sheriff implemented a "precautionary quarantine" in a jail unit after six inmates showed flu-like symptoms within 48 hours, Deputy Brooke Keast said.

Washoe County jail inmate tests positive for swine flu virus

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed one jail inmate has contracted the swine flu virus, the sheriff’s office announced today.


Eleven inmates have shown symptoms consistent with the virus, now formally called the H1N1, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Four test results are pending.
