MADRID - The players Eric Abidal and Yaya Toure of Barcelona, contracted the H1N1 virus and will be shut out of Saturday's match against Athletic Bilbao at the Spanish Championship, the Catalan club said on Friday.
Tests confirmed that the French defender Abidal and Tour? half Ivoire are called the swine flu, and therefore must be kept isolated, according to the official website of the Barcelona (www.fcbarcelona.com).
"We will overcome it," said coach Pep Guardiola told reporters. "We knew that many people have it and we were at risk. Now that (the disease) came here, we must ensure that does not spread, and so isolate them."
"It's never a good time for something like this happen," said Guardiola. "It is true that we have important games ahead, but let us turn to the other (players)."
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday that the H1N1 virus is advancing towards the east, Europe and Asia, after apparently having gone through its peak in Western Europe and the United States.
At least 6770 people died from the pandemic around the world since its inception in April, according to the latest WHO data.
Five players from another Spanish club, Osasuna of Pamplona contracted swine flu in recent weeks, and a set of Betis in Seville for the second division had to be postponed last month because 13 players had the infection.
Another victim was the coach Quique Sanchez Flores, who this week had to miss training for the Atletico Madrid because of the flu, but has returned to work on Friday.
