Mother-of-two Carol Williams spent 77 days in hospital after declining the vaccine from her GP.

Eight months after her terrifying ordeal, Mrs Williams, of Bromley Cross, is warning others to protect themselves.

She said: ?If you?re offered the flu vaccine and you fall into the atrisk categories, or are a health worker, you really must take it.

?I was working in the health profession and had asthma so I fell into two categories and I still didn?t think I?d get it. ?I thought I was infallible but I was so poorly, and I nearly didn?t make it here to tell the story.

?I just thought swine flu was a three-day thing and I wondered what all the fuss was about. I thought it was just the elderly and poorly who got it, and I should have known better because I?m a health worker.?

The warning comes as NHS North West reveals that the region has among the highest numbers of ?at-risk? groups. Figures show that last winter more than 1,290 people were admitted to the region?s hospitals with primary diagnosis of flu.

Mrs Williams, aged 43, visited her GP on Christmas Eve, 2010, after developing a cough.
