NBC 10 NEWS
Published: July 7, 2009
A second death in Rhode Island has been linked to swine flu.
The state Department of Health said Tuesday that the Providence County woman had underlying medical conditions that increased her risk for serious illness from influenza.
?This is a reminder that H1N1 is in Rhode Island and continues to spread. Most cases we are seeing in Rhode Island are mild illness; however, anyone with underlying medical conditions such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, immunosuppression or pregnancy can have more severe symptoms or can die,? said health director David Gifford.
The Department of Health said there have been 58 hospitalizations and two deaths linked to swine flu in Rhode Island.
Health officials reminded people to wash their hands frequently, cough or sneeze into their elbows, and stay home when sick to stop the spread of germs.
Additional information is available from the health department?s hot line at 401-222-8022, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
