I live in a rich industrialized country. Most people here have food to eat and a place to live even if they are poor. Sometimes I feel sorry for myself when things do not go my way. Sometimes I need to remember the strife that is met everyday by most of the world and that in a pandemic I could be met with these same problems. This quote from St. Francis of Assisi, I think, reminds us of our smallness in a big world and what the true priorities should be, especially in a pandemic.
"That where there is hatred I may bring love;
That where there is wrong I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
That where there is discord I may bring truth;
That where there is doubt I may bring faith;
That where there is despair I may bring hope;
And where there are shadows I may bring.. light;
That where there is sadness I may bring joy;
...grant that I may seek rather to comfort than be comforted,
To understand than be understood,
To love than be loved;
For it is by giving that one receives,
It is by self-forgetting that one finds"
- St. Francis of Assisi
