Swine Flu Spreading Quickly in Texoma
Story Updated: Oct 7, 2009 at 6:15 PM CDT
H1N1 is spreading quickly in Texoma. Midwestern State University health officials said they are seeing between 15 and 18 new patients with symptoms daily.
The H1N1 virus is hitting hard in Texoma, though county health officials said symptoms aren't as severe as once feared. A limited amount of the vaccine for the virus has made it to Texas but not yet to our area. There are priority individuals who will get the vaccine first when it arrives, such as health-care workers who deal with infected patients, but Lou Franklin, Director of the Wichita Falls Health District, said it may be available to the public next month.
Franklin said, "We had first been told that we would have an adequate supply of the vaccine to have a mass change by October 15th, and what we now know is that's not going to happen, because of the delay receiving the vaccine. We know from the state of Texas that we'll have it probably in November."
The vaccine won't help if you already have the virus but Franklin said most cases have been mild and cleared up on their own.
