Swine Flu Identified in Counselors at Four Maine Summer Camps - 6/23/09 11:39 AM ESTBack

Seventy two cases of swine flu have now been identified in Maine, including 16 cases that have turned up in visitors from out-of-state. That's according to Maine Center for Disease Control head Dr. Dora Anne Mills. Mills says the disease has also turned up in four summer camps in Maine. She says the camps are in Cumberland, York, Oxford and Lincoln Counties.

Mills says the cases so far have been confined to nine counselors, who got sick before kids arrived. She says the camps are working with the Maine CDC on steps to prevent any spread of the disease, and she says there's no reason to keep kids away from them.

She says as swine flu continues to spread in Maine, kids can pick up the disease anywhere. Mills says the best defense against the disease is good respiratory hygiene: cover coughs and sneezes, wash your hands frequently and stay home if you're sick.
