A case of avian flu spotted in the Grand Duchy
06.09.2021
Patrick JACQUEMOT
Months that the epidemic lurked around the country, and on Monday the Luxembourg veterinary authorities have just confirmed the presence of the infectious disease.

(pj) An alert last November, another at the end of 2020, a third in January 2021 with more firm recommendations: the concern to see the avian flu virus entering Luxembourg again had been hovering for months. And this Monday, the administration of veterinary services (ASV) confirmed a first case of H5N8. The infected animal was spotted "in an amateur breeding in Olingen", specify the authorities.

Luxembourg meat producers supported

The animal arrived in the east of the Grand Duchy following an importation of poultry from a market in Belgium. This while special measures had been taken at the beginning of the year, to avoid this kind of danger. Annoying, even if the veterinary services want to be reassuring by indicating that "the consumption of meat and eggs is without risk for public health". On the other hand, the virus can wreak havoc on farms, which is feared here.
Like four years ago

In order to limit the spread of the virus to other farms, ASV has relaunched a whole range of precautionary and biosecurity measures. Instructions to be followed by any keeper of poultry and birds:

All transport and display of live poultry is prohibited (except with special authorization from the ASV).
It is strongly recommended to confine poultry indoors, respectively to cover poultry runs with netting.
Feeding and watering must take place inside buildings.
Any abnormal poultry mortality should be reported to a veterinarian or to the administration of veterinary services (Tel. 2478 2539 or info@asv.etat.lu).

The avian influenza virus had already posed a problem in several farms in 2017 in the Grand Duchy.
