A call for calmness in responding to the pandemic

I know of three stories now that deal with patient's feeling rage at suffering through the pandemic. I urge everyone to take a breath, and maintain control through the next 90 days as we begin to see the flu up close.

The first case involves a former policeman who lost his temper regarding the lack of school closures at his child's grade school.

Here's a link to the 2nd story:

Man in voluntary H1N1 virus quarantine shoots up house
By: News 14 Carolina Web Staff

MADISON, N.C. -- A man is now in the hospital for evaluation with pending criminal charges after sheriff’s officials say he shot up his home in Madison.

The incident happened Wednesday night around 11 p.m. on Gold Hill Road. Officers say Gerry Bullins started firing a .22-caliber rifle after getting into an argument with his family. His family members left the house to call for help.

When deputies arrived, they say Bullins fired an estimated 30 shots in their direction. They say it took over an hour to take him into custody.

Police in the home were under a voluntary quarantine related to the H1N1 virus

Relatives of dead A/H1N1 flu patient smash hospital
www.chinaview.cn 2009-07-02 20:28:30 Print
HANGZHOU, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Angry relatives of an A/H1N1 flu patient who died "accidentally" Wednesday in east China's Zhejiang Province stormed the hospital where she died as they suspected electric shock caused her death.

More than 20 of the patient's relatives rushed into the No. 1 People's Hospital of Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou city, where the patient had been staying, and smashed the hall next to the gate and an ambulance with rocks. Glasses from the hall and flower terrace in front of the hospital were destroyed and the ambulance damaged.

The 34-year-old woman was found dead at 7:35 a.m. Wednesday in her ward lavatory at the No. 1 People's Hospital of Xiaoshan District in Hangzhou, the provincial capital, according to the Hangzhou municipal health bureau.

Local police and health authorities are still investigating the cause.

The patient was recovering as her temperature had been normal for a week. She coughed occasionally, but other flu symptoms had disappeared.

She was admitted to the hospital on June 23.

We're dealing with the unknown, and people don't deal well to the unknown. Some will allow their stress to be released in dangerous ways. We have to help one another now. We are all responsible for our actions. If not, anarchy will soon ensue.

Truthfully there appears to be a possible linkage between Tamiflu and some peoples and suicide ideation.

Swine Flu Worries Spark Cambridge Jail Riot
Prisoners Evacuated After Middlesex Jail Floods

Inmate fears over an apparent swine flu outbreak sparked a riot at the Middlesex County Jail in Cambridge on Sunday.

Several prisoners became unruly, breaking sprinkler heads which in turn flooded the entire building. The jail's fire suppression system was also damaged and power to the entire facility had to be cut off.

"The flooding went down from the 18th floor all the way through the building into the lobby and it was cascading down the elevator shaft," said Middlesex County Sheriff James DiPaola. He said the damage was the work of just nine inmates.

The jail holds about 400 inmates. One hundred and eighty-seven prisoners who face the most serious charges were bused to other local corrections facilities. A generator was brought in to supply power to the remaining inmates.

DiPaola said the disturbance started after fears of H1N1 influenza, or swine flu, spread.

Last week one inmate was diagnosed with a likely case of H1N1 and put in medical quarantine. Over the weekend ten more inmates were diagnosed with the flu and put into isolation. Two correctional officers also have the flu.

According to the Sheriff's office, the Middlesex Jail was built to hold 160 prisoners. The prisoner population as of Sunday was 403.
