? Outbreaks
There are no new outbreaks in this report
? Epidemiology
Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection: Contact with wild species suspected but not confirmed
? Epidemiological comments
Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection (cont'd):
This reoccurrence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Saskatchewan most likely resulted from the introduction of a low pathogenicity H7N3 virus from wild aquatic waterfowl.
Epidemiological comments:
The surveillance in the 3-km-radius and 10-km-radius zones and control area is completed.
All of the six backyard flocks in the 3-km-radius zone; the only commercial flock and the only backyard flock in the 10-km-radius zone; and a representative sample of the poultry industry in the control area (Saskatchewan) beyond the 10 km region perimeter have been tested for notifiable avian influenza.
All were negative for evidence of notifiable avian influenza virus or previous exposure to notifiable avian influenza virus.
All restrictions in the 3-km-radius and 10-km-radius zones and control area and in the rest of the province of Saskatchewan have been lifted on 31 October 2007 (see follow-up report No. 3).
All restrictions on the only infected farm (index farm in Saskatchewan) have been lifted after completion of cleaning and disinfection procedures on 18 January 2008 under the direct supervision of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
The first barns on the index farm were repopulated with a total of 16,000 birds on 30 January 2008.
The birds have shown no clinical sign to date.
This event is now resolved. On 17 April 2007, the three months period following the end of cleaning and disinfection of the single infected premises has expired and therefore Canada declares itself free from highly pathogenic notifiable avian influenza.
? Control measures
Measures applied Stamping out
Quarantine
Movement control inside the country
Screening
Disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s)
Vaccination prohibited
No treatment of affected animals
Measures to be applied No other measures
