Avian Flu outbreak "low risk" in Macau
Friday, 13 June 2008
The Avian Flu Co-ordinating Group's technical team said yesterday after a closed meeting that Macau is at a "relatively low risk" for the virus outbreak and has no need to stop importing live poultry and birds from the mainland.
Following the H5NI virus recently being detected in a number of fresh food markets in Hong Kong that led to the instant temporarily close down of all poultry stalls and the slaughter of remaining live chickens, a meeting was held including the presence of representatives from the Civil and Municipal Affairs Bureau, Health Bureau, and the Government Information Bureau.
The team members decided on a series of risk management measures in case when avian flu is found in any local poultry and birds sales outlets.
Once a sales outlet's virus test result appears to be positive, business has to be suspended for seven days and all of its live stock has to be slaughtered.
A health assessment will be conducted after the seven day period and if the result does not pass, the Health Bureau will has the right to prolong the sales suspension period to 21 days.
The technical team said Macau's current epidemic prevention work is "effective" and they believe that the key to prevent Avian Flu is to ensure a full implementation of the prevention work.
If birds are found dead in the community, the public can call the wild bird bodies handling hotline on 28870120.
