The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health urged members of the public to be vigilant against Enterovirus-71 (EV71) infection following the confirmation of four cases by laboratory tests today (June 2).

A spokesman for the CHP said the cases involved three boys and a girl aged between two and 11. Laboratory tests on their throat or stool samples collected earlier showed positive result to EV71.

Among them, a two-year-old boy developed fever, and rash over his hands and feet on May 26. He attended private practitioners on May 29 and was admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital on May 30. He was discharged today.

No outbreak of Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD) was reported in the kindergarten the boy attended.

The second case involved a three-year-old boy. He developed vesicles on palms and soles on May 27 and was admitted to the Princess Margaret Hospital. He was discharged on May 28.

No outbreak of HFMD was reported in the kindergarten the boy attended.

The third case involved a four-year-old girl who developed vesicular rash over her hands on May 28. She attended the clinic of Tuen Mun Hospital on May 29. No hospitalisation was required.

Nine other students of the nursery the girl attended had similar symptoms between May 23 and 28. One of them was confirmed to have EV71 infection on May 28 and reported in press release the same day.

CHP staff visited the school and provided health advice to the management.

So far, no new case was reported since the implementation of control measures at the school.

The last case involved an 11-year-old boy. He developed oral ulcers and rash on hands and feet on May 28 and was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital on May 30. He was now in stable condition.

The primary school he attended had no outbreak of HFMD.

There are 42 cases of EV71 infection reported to CHP so far this year.

There were 35, 8, 16 and 12 cases in the years 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively.

Hand-foot-mouth disease closes nursery

The Centre for Health Protection has advised Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau Kindergarten-cum-Nursery in Tseung Kwan O to suspend classes for two weeks due to a hand-foot-mouth disease outbreak.

Eight children and a staff member came down with hand-foot-mouth disease symptoms May 2 to 13, with a two-year-old girl confirmed to have been infected with enterovirus-71 on May 19. Their condition is stable and no hospitalisation was required.

As for the third case, a girl aged four developed rash over hands and feet with oral ulcers on May 30. She attended government out-patient clinic and the Accident and Emergency Department of Princess Margaret Hospital on May 30 and 31 respectively. She has recovered without hospitalisation.

The kindergarten she attended reported five cases (including the girl) of Hand Foot Mouth Disease with onset of symptoms between May 24 and 30.

Investigation revealed that she had traveled to the Mainland during the incubation period.

Five children developed symptoms between June 6 and 13. Of them, a three-year-old girl was confirmed to have been infected with Enterovirus-71 on June 13. None needed hospitalisation and all are in stable condition.

(Media-Newswire.com) - The Centre for Health Protection ( CHP ) of the Department of Health today ( June 23 ) called on members of the public and management of institutions to maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene to prevent upper respiratory tract infection ( URI ).

The appeal was made following CHP's investigation into two reports of URI outbreaks in a nursery school and a home for the elderly.

The first case affected 28 children aged between one and five in a nursery in Wong Tai Sin. They developed symptoms of URI, including fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat between June 3 and 20. Of them, a three-year-old boy was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and was discharged. Other affected children consulted general practitioners or out-patient clinics and are now in stable condition.

To prevent upper respiratory tract infection and influenza, the public are advised to adopt the following measures:

* Build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
* Maintain good personal hygiene, wash hands after sneezing or coughing and wear a mask when developing symptoms of respiratory infections;
* Maintain good ventilation; and
* Avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation, especially during peak influenza season.

Members of the public, particularly children, elderly people and those with chronic diseases, should wear face masks and consult their doctors for medical advice promptly if they develop symptoms of respiratory tract infection.

CHP investigating a case of EV71

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (June 25) confirmed a case of Enterovirus-71 (EV71) infection involving a three-year-old girl and urged the public to be vigilant against the disease.

The girl developed fever, oral ulcers and rash over hands and feet on June 20 and consulted a private doctor on the same day and June 23. No hospitalization was required. Laboratory result of her specimens confirmed EV71 infection today.

CHP's investigation revealed that she had no travel history during the incubation period and her family members did not show any symptom.

Four other children of the nursery school she attended had similar symptoms between May 22 and June 14.

CHP staff visited the school and provided health advice to the management.

So far, no new case has been reported since the implementation of control measures at the nursery.

There are 57 cases of EV71 infection reported to CHP so far this year. There were 35, 8, 16 and 12 cases in the years 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively.

EV71 is a viral infection usually found among young children. It is also one of the causative agents for hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD). A CHP spokesman said that May to August was the usual peak season for HFMD and EV71.

The infection is transmitted by direct contact with nose and throat discharges, people should be vigilant against the disease and observe the following preventive measures:

* Wash hands before eating and after going to toilet and changing diapers;
* Cover mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing;
* Maintain good ventilation;
* Thoroughly clean toys or appliances which are contaminated by nasal or oral secretions.

Children suffering from the infection should stay at home and avoid contacting other children until they have recovered.

Zhejiang issued a warning orange hand, foot and mouth disease

Since July and August are still hand-foot-mouth disease in the high season, Zhejiang Province Government has decided to launch two emergency response, issued orange warning.

Provincial Health Department announced that as of yesterday, Zhejiang had reported cases of Hand, Foot and mouth disease in 24,167 cases, the incidence rate per 100,000 of 48.53, had reported seven cases of death cases, the mortality rate for 0.029 percent.

Zhejiang reported incidence of the top five ranked as the city of Wenzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Shaoxing and Jinhua, Zhejiang accounted for the total number of reported incidence of 71.30 percent.
