A youth has died from swine flu in the east of the country, bringing the total number of deaths in Ireland to nine.
The patient had an underlying medical condition, the Department of Health has confirmed. No further details will be made available, it said. However, it has been reported that the youth is a 14-year-old boy.
The Health Minister, the Department and the HSE extended their sympathies to the family and friends of the youth.
Swine flu cases in Ireland have seen a major increase in the last week, with cases doubling. Some 7,000 people are now being diagnosed with suspected swine flu every week, and fatalities have also seen an increase, with three deaths being announced yesterday.
