More than 900 students were out sick with flu-like symptoms at St. Charles East High School, administrators said on Tuesday.
More than 700 students called in sick on Monday. The school enrolls about 2,100 kids, meaning about 40 percent of the student body stayed home from class today.
Administrators do not know if the students are suffering from H1N1 or some other virus because they do not ask specifically about symptoms when students or their parents call in sick.
It is believed to be the biggest outbreak of flu-like illness in the Chicago area since the school year began.
Right now, the school plans to remain open during the outbreak.
"St. Charles East High School reported a higher than normal rate of absences for this time of year with many reports of flu-like symptoms," the school said in a statement on its website.
"District 303 is following the guidelines regarding H1N1 from the Centers for Disease Control and the Kane County Health Department. Those guidelines recommend that schools should remain open even though flu-like illnesses are present."
