Definitely something to keep an eye on, but the Epoch Times is a REALLY bad source for China, associated with dissident groups. They have reported various false or exaggerated outbreaks before. They are also known for sloppy reporting, including some of which is visible in the above article (there's no way there are 50 plague suspects in Ziketan - they wouldn't have lifted the quarantine). I believe the phrase "epidemic hemorrhagic fever" is a mistranslation of the name of an actual disease, known to ProMed as HFRS (hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome) that is caused by a hantavirus and reported widely in China.

I think this is a false alarm. I don't know if you know anything about Epoch Times, but it is a VERY bad (both biased and sloppy) source. There are many things that could cause vomitting and fever in China (and note this is the far northeast China, not where the marmots are). I wouldn't be too concerned about this until I read it in a more credible source.

According to Li, local authorities tried to pacify villagers claiming that the patients were not affected with pneumonic plague. However, a large number of medical workers were deployed to disinfect the village and spread rat poison over the area. Li suspects that local officials are intentionally hiding the truth as their story conflicts with those of the hospital.

Dr. Zhang, a physician on duty at the Department of Infectious Diseases at Yichun City Hospital, confessed that nine patients from the village are in the hospital and receiving treatment. He said that they were currently in stable condition, but he refused to reveal that the patients had pneumonic plague.

?They are not affected with pneumonic plague at all,? said Dr. Zhang. ?They were affected with epidemic hemorrhagic fever virus, which is also spread from rodents. There are many different kinds of viruses that rodents carry. If people drink polluted food or water, they will be affected, but this is absolutely not pneumonic plague.?

When informed that the hospital had told relatives of patients that they were affected with pneumonic plague and isolated for treatment, Dr. Zhang said that he had not heard of anyone spreading such information. He refused to comment whether the hospital reported the situation to the authorities.

The Yichun City hall and the Municipal Bureau of Public Health could not be reached.

I don't trust the Epoch Times at all. There seems to be an outbreak there, but I don't think it is plague. Plague is not endemic in that area, and the fact that some people were ill for 10 days without being diagnosed and are still alive argues against this being plague. China does report quite a few cases of "epidemic hemorrhagic fever", which I believe is caused by a hantavirus spread by rats, so the Chinese story is consistent. It is a little bizarre that article #10 refers to a "plague pandemic", which would be a VERY bad thing (1347 anyone?), but that appears to be an abuse of the word pandemic. Artcles out of Africa during VHF outbreaks frequently refer to VHF pandemics.

RSOE EDIS has also picked up this story, but only has the Epoch story that is post #11.

I trust post #10 to be more or less accurate. Keep an eye out for more updates from sources other than Epoch Error.

Zhang Yanjie, director of the Yichun municipal health bureau, confirmed the outbreak in a bid to dispel rumors on the Internet that say the city had pneumonic plague cases.

The seven people living in different parts of the forests in Jinshantun District contracted the disease between July 28 and August 3, he said. The patients are in stable condition.

Investigation shows that the patients drank water or ate food contaminated by mice.

Local health authorities are ordered to ensure earlier recovery of the patients from the illness and to step up efforts to prevent outbreaks of contagious diseases.

Residents unhappy with pneumonic plague cover-up

Following recent outbreaks of the pneumonic plague in Xinghai, Qinghai Province, news of the plague has also come from Jinshanzhun district of Yichun City, Heilongjiang Province. At least 8 people have fallen ill to the disease in Baishan Forestry Station and Fengmao Forestry Station. Local residents have reported that people in the region are now under curfew, and that the public is unhappy with the government’s cover-ups on information regarding the development of the plague, and their own inability to afford medical costs.

Ms Liu from Baishan told overseas reporters, six cases of pneumonic plague have been confirmed at her station, with symptoms of ongoing fever, pains in bones and joints around the body, as well as vomiting. She said the local government is currently attempting to conceal information about the spread of this disease.
Ms Liu said (recording):

“We have cases of the pneumonic plague here. With over 400 families living in our area, there have been 6 confirmed cases. Each person has to spend their own money to try and cure the disease, it’s just bad luck to whoever gets it. There are also cases in Bailin Forestry Station, Fengmao, and Fengling. Nobody is taking action, and it’s not taken very seriously. The victims just try to cure themselves. We have heard of such confirmed cases since two years ago, and this year there are many more compared. Here, we live by producing Mu-er (an edible tree fungus), and there is no other source of income on the mountain. Come and see! See the difficulties of our people, there is nobody to assist. One family had two victims, and they are spending 15 000 - 16 000 renminbi per person for treatment, which they cannot handle. The authorities don’t report on it to higher levels either, it seems they have suppressed the information!”

Another resident in Baishan Forestry Station also said, the local government has spread pamphlets which describe the disease as a fever affecting the bloodstream. The illness requires expensive treatment, and most patients have been forced to borrow money from friends and relatives for hospital treatment.”

This resident said (recording):
“People who caught this plague have gone to Yichun Hospital, and have not returned since! I don’t know if it can be classified as the pneumonic plague. Nobody has told us how to handle it! They just hand out the flyers, think the job is finished, and have taken any other procedure. Can the government tell us that it is related to the pneumonic plague, and say it can be treated with public funding. Individuals cannot afford it, because each time it takes tens of thousands of renminbi, who has that kind of money to treat it? There have also been people in our region who caught the plague, and they have all borrowed money, a bit from here and there from friends and relatives, in order to see the doctor.”

Ms Li from Bailin Forestry station said people are currently suffering from the plague in her area, and that the same disease has been seen in past years.

Ms Li (recording):
“We heard it’s a serious disease which could take lives. There are 6 to 7 cases here. Last year we discovered one case, but after he fell in a coma, he was eventually revived. We learned over these couple of years that it was the pneumonic plague, we did not know this 2 years ago.”

Resident Mr Dai said (recording):
“I heard two people died in Baishan Forestry Station. In our area, Fengmao, we have 2 cases, both quite serious. We are living under curfew now, nobody is allowed to leave, and nobody is allowed to enter. There’s no real way to prevent the disease, it is up to the individual. There is a vaccine, if you want to spend 39 or 40 dollars to get it, that’s counted as prevention. They [the authorities] have distributed flyers saying, if you get this disease, go to the hospital.”

Other residents have said (recording)
“There have also been cases in Fengmao, two victims who worked on the mountains. They had seen rats crawl over left over food, and drank some contaminated water which lead to the disease.”

This resident says, (recording)
“The situation is quite severe at Baishan, they are preparing for the curfew, it’s serious… … seven or eight people caught the plague, and in some serious cases people have died.”

Sound of Hope reporters telephoned Jinshanzhun District Hospital in Yuchun City, and the doctor in office denied claims of the pneumonic plague.

This doctor said (recording)
“There’s nobody who got the pneumonic plague, no, no, no, it’s a rumor.”

In 1914, an epidemic of the bubonic plague took place in Yichun City, and killed 618 people.

According to reports on The Epoch Times newspaper on August 14, one doctor at Yichun City Centre Hospital admitted there were 9 patients of a blood-fever plague at the hospital. This doctor said although rats were carriers of this disease, it is not the pneumonic plague. Meanwhile, a female staff at the same officer told the reporter 10 victims of the pneumonic plague are currently undergoing treatment.

Suspected death from pneumonic plague in Heilongjiang

Recent reports have revealed cases of suspected pneumonic plague at a forest management area in Yichun city of Heilongjiang Province. Authorities have denied correlations between the disease and bubonic or pneumonic plague, and claim the illness to be a contagious hemorrhagic fever.

Censorship of news regarding the death a labourer who died in hospital, has aroused suspicion from the locals. A number of individuals have expressed to overseas media their dissatisfaction toward the government?s concealment of information in relation to the plague?s development.

One individual who preferred to remain anonymous told SOH reporters, a worker from Anhui Province recently died in his local hospital, while currently other victims continue to be admitted to Yichun Hospital for treatment.

He explains (recording) ?This disease is caused by a bacterium carried by rodents. One of the initial symptoms is the fever, and in serious cases one can die from this. We have people who have been released from hospital, but there are still a number who remain there, probably 4 or 5 with more being admitted. Upon early detection, with early treatment, it may only cost around 10 000 renminbi. However in serious cases it may cost 20 000 to 30 000 out of your own pocket.

Residents from the forestry management station in Fengou of the Jinshanzhun district, have also voiced their concerns that authorities have made no announcement, or taken preventative procedures in regards to the outbreak.

This resident from Fengou said (recording), ?Rodents, rats, if Baishan has them, wouldn?t Fengmao also have them? We don?t know and we dont understand these things. This year we have seen more rodent pests, but don?t know anyone who caught the disease, at least it hasn?t been publicised.?

Another resident in Fenglin said that one person had fallen ill to the disease in his locality, but has returned home since treatment. She states (Recording) ?There is one such case in Fengling, and after the doctors treatment, he came back.?

Baishan and Fengmao forestry station have been sources of news about the plague. A resident from Fengmao said (recording) ?There has been two cases in Fengmao, so we all took the vaccination. Can you afford not take it in this situation??

The government of Yichun city made reports on the 17th of August denying the occurrence of the plague in the three forestry stations around Jinshanzhun district. Their report claimed that 7 people had fallen ill to a hemorrhagic fever. Local residents have also complained to SOH Radio Network about recent events of harassment from the police in the homes of victims who had accepted interviews with overseas media on this issue.
