Visitor restrictions at Hoyles Escasoni: H1N1

Eastern Health has confirmed one case of Influenza A (H1N1) at Hoyles Escasoni Complex in St. John’s.For the ongoing safety of all residents and the prevention of the spread of the illness into the community through families and friends, visitor restrictions are being imposed, the authority said in a news release, calling the strain a “mild respiratory disease.”
Staff at the facilities are using good infection control practices and restricting movement between the buildings and floors within the buildings, Eastern Health said.
The public is also reminded that the best way to prevent the spread of all infection is to wash hands frequently and often and to cover your coughs and sneezes.
If members of the public must visit a resident at Hoyles Escasoni, Eastern Health asks that they please call the nurses station first and do not visit if they have flu-like symptoms themselves.
Although this is the first reported case of H1N1 in one of Eastern Health's facilities, cases of H1N1 are appearing in the communiy. Individuals in the hospitals and long-term care facilities are often more vulnerable to even mild coughs and colds. It is best that people who are sick themselves not visit people in those facilities.
