Toll in TN rains mounts to 77

STAFF WRITER 16:31 HRS IST
Chennai, Nov 11 (PTI) The death toll in rain-related incidents under the influence of the North East monsoon rose to 77 in Tamil Nadu, with reports of seven more deaths.

Three deaths were reported overnight in Nilgiris, taking the death toll in that district to 40, police said here today.

One death each was reported from Villupuram, Tirupur, Erode and Cuddalore, they added.

Most of the 77 deaths over the past two weeks were due to wall and roof collapses, electrocution and landslides. Many roads, bridges and houses were also damaged in several parts of the state, police said.

Meteorological department officials have said there is a likelihood of light to moderate to rather heavy rain at a few places over all districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 48 hours. Chennai would be generally cloudy with a few spells of rain or thundershowers in some areas.

More solatium

Giving the figures of solatium distributed under different heads during the present Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime and the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) rule, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said that in 2005, when the AIADMK was in power, the overall solatium given was Rs.931 crore in 22 districts. But, a sum of Rs.1,027 crore was given in 12 districts in 2008.

Rain-hit farmers were given compensation of Rs.4,500 per hectare during the previous AIADMK regime, whereas the norm was liberalised during the DMK rule and they were given Rs.7,500 per hectare.

To each of those who were covered under the crop insurance scheme, Rs.10,000 was given per hectare.

Mr. Karunanidhi gave an account of the action taken by his government in the wake of the recent spell of rain.
