Baby Dies Of Swine Flu In Broward

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- An 8-month-old boy has become the most recent person in Broward County to die of swine flu, according to the Broward County Health Department.
In a news release Wednesday, the county health department said a total of eight people in Broward County have died from the virus. A 33-year-old woman in Palm Beach County also recently died from swine flu, health officials said.
State health officials said Wednesday that a total of 77 people have died from swine flu in Florida.
The Florida Department of Health spokeswoman Susan Smith released the state H1N1 death toll Wednesday. She also confirmed that Florida now has widespread swine flu. The change in Florida's status from regional flu activity to widespread activity can be viewed on the Web site of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Smith said the change in Florida's status is not a cause for alarm. She attributes it to school starting.
Health officials are urging Floridians to seek medical help if they feel sick, to wash hands frequently, practice good hygiene and to stay home if they feel ill.
The state Department of Health has launched a toll-free telephone number for public health information and updates on swine flu. The line, which provides information in English, Spanish and Creole, is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call 1-877-352-3581.
