Chile?s aftershocks significantly damaged Rancagua

Chile's new inaugurated President Sebastian Pinera said a series of aftershocks on Thursday caused "significant damage" in Rancagua, a city almost 100 km south of the capital.

There were no initial reports of fatalities. Pinera said he expected to have more complete reports later in the day on the impact of the 6.9 magnitude aftershock, which hit just moments before he was sworn in as president.

Geologists Set Sail For Chile Earthquake Site

Scientists at the University of California, San Diego are undertaking an expedition to explore the rupture site of the 8.8-magnitude Chilean earthquake.

The team hopes to capitalize on a unique opportunity to capture fresh data from the event by studying changes in the seafloor that resulted from movements along faults and submarine landslides.

The "rapid response" expedition, called the Survey of Earthquake And Rupture Offshore Chile, will take place aboard the research vessel Melville.

"This rapid response cruise is a rare opportunity to better understand the processes that affect the generation and size of tsunamis," said Julie Morris, NSF division director for Ocean Sciences. "Seafloor evidence of the quake will contribute to understanding similar earthquake regions worldwide."

The primary focus of the research will be mapping the seafloor with swath multibeam sonar to produce detailed topographic maps. Data from mapping the earthquake rupture zone will be made public soon after the research cruise ends.

The new data will be compared with pre-quake data taken by scientists at Germany's Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences (IFM-GEOMAR).

Emergency relief for earthquake victims in Chile

The Government has accepted the advice of the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee and approved from the Disaster Relief Fund a grant of $2 million to World Vision Hong Kong to undertake a relief project for earthquake victims in Chile.

Announcing the grant today (March 19), a government spokesman said that the committee hoped the grant would help provide relief to the earthquake victims.

"To ensure that the money will be used for the designated purposes, the relief agency has been asked to submit an evaluation report and audited accounts on the use of the grant after the relief project has been completed," the spokesman said.

Chile Govt Announces First Earthquake Reconstruction Measures

SANTIAGO (Dow Jones)--The new administration of Sebastian Pinera announced Friday the first post-earthquake reconstruction measures aimed at school funding, temporary shelters and assistance for the fishing sector.

Chile was hit by a destructive 8.8-magnitude earthquake and a tsunami on Feb. 27. The total cost of the destruction is estimated at some $30 billion.

Municipal school reconstruction will be supported by a 10 billion peso ($18.91 million) fund to reestablish classes before April 26, said Education Minister Joaquin Lavin in a press briefing.

Children in the hardest-hit quake areas haven&apos;t yet started the 2010 school year, which began the second week of March.

The government also announced 20,000 scholarships to avoid higher-education desertions. The cost of both measures is $26 million, said the minister.

The non-industrialized small-scale fishing sector, hard hit by the tsunami that followed the earthquake, will receive CLP5.5 billion to assist 9,000 families, said Economy Minister Juan Andres Fontaine.

Individual fishermen who lost their boats will receive aid equivalent to 25% of a new vessel for up to CLP2 million. Additionally, certificate of registration debts will be forgiven.

The government will install 20,000 small wooden houses, that will complement the 20,000 financed by a local charity. /.../

SANTIAGO, March 18 (Reuters) - Chileans' knowledge of earthquakes, combined with the abnormally long time it took for the Feb. 27 quake to reach its crescendo, saved thousands of lives, a leading geophysicist said on Thursday.

Experts have been investigating why Chile's 8.8-magnitude quake, the world's fifth strongest recorded earthquake since 1900, killed relatively few people -- around 500, by the government's estimate.

Walter Mooney, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey who has been chasing earthquakes in South America for 35 years, credited the Chilean people for knowing to evacuate buildings at the first sign of a big one.

Moreover, the shaking grew over 20 or 30 seconds before reaching its crescendo, he said. Typically that occurs much quicker.

"The combination of the understanding of earthquake risk and the time before the worst shaking and the beginning of collapse -- this saved many, many thousands of lives," Mooney told a news conference at the U.S. embassy.

Chile?s earthquake, fifth largest ever says US Geological Survey

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported this week that Chile?s devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake on Feb. 27 has been officially ranked as the world?s fifth largest quake ever.

According to the USGS, Chile can claim the largest earthquake of the 20th century ? Valdivia?s 1960 quake that registered 9.5 in magnitude.

But the USGS pointed out that magnitude does not correlate fatality, noting that in 1976 more than 255,000 Chinese died after a 7.5 earthquake, making it the most deadly earthquake.

The second most deadly quake was in Indonesia in 2004, when 227, 898 died due in a 9.1 earthquake.

Chile?s deadliest earthquake occurred in 1939 in Chill?n, a 7.8 magnitude quake that killed 28,000. Chile?s biggest quake, in Valdivia, left only 1655 victims.

Psychological Support Remains Vital One Month After Chile Earthquake


Friday, March 26, 2010 ? As Chilean Red Cross relief distributions to families affected by the massive earthquake that struck central Chile on February 27 continue to gain momentum, special emphasis is being given to psychological support for people traumatized by continuing strong aftershocks.

More than 200 aftershocks measuring greater than 5 magnitude have been reported since the disaster a month ago.

In Huala, Chile, the Red Cross is helping teachers prepare for the post-quake fears children may have when they return to class after summer vacation.

?These strong tremors are particularly distressing to people trying to recover from the trauma of having lost family members and friends, homes, and livelihoods,? explains Gustavo Ramirez, regional representative, currently in Chile. ?People who live in the coastal areas are not only afraid of the aftershocks but also of any possible tsunamis they may trigger, and even people whose homes have been assessed as being safe are afraid of staying indoors. They wonder whether these aftershocks will ever end.?

The 14-member psychological support team from Spain, supported by staff from the Red Cross societies of Colombia, Ecuador and Nicaragua, as well as by Chilean Red Cross volunteers, have treated nearly 1,700 adults and children since the disaster. They are working in the region of Maule and in Santiago. In addition to holding therapeutic sessions with different groups of people affected by the disaster, with a special emphasis on children, they are also training Red Cross volunteers.

Additionally, to ensure people have access to healthcare in areas where hospitals have been destroyed, several other Red Cross teams have been dispatched to the affected regions. A clinic operated by the Spanish Red Cross has treated nearly 1,200 people in Huala?? (Maule region). A second clinic sent by the Japanese Red Cross has been set up in Parral (Bio-B?o region) and the surgical field hospital supported by the Red Cross societies of Canada, Finland and Norway is being set up in Pitrufqu?n (Araucan?a region). These facilities will all be turned over to local staff, who will maintain healthcare services, throughout the next weeks.

Chilean Red Cross volunteers also continue their vital work, receiving and packing donated goods, transporting them to the affected areas and distributing food, hygiene items and emergency items to survivors. To date, more than 2,300 households (approximately 11,600 people) have received kitchen utensils, hygiene items, blankets, water containers and tarps in the most severely-affected regions of Maule and B?o-B?o.

In recent weeks, the American Red Cross doubled its contribution to $1 million for relief efforts in Chile and plans to provide additional support in the coming weeks and months as the response progresses. Additionally, it has provided 5,000 water containers, more than 1,100 hygiene kits and one disaster specialist, who is serving on a regional assessment team.

The global Red Cross network collectively aims to provide health services for up to 90,000 people, shelter assistance for 50,000 people, relief items for 75,000 people as well as water and sanitation services for up to 10,000 people within the next year.

Post-quake Chile's tourism industry hit hard by false impressions; most sites are fine

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) ? Outside Santiago's Fine Arts Museum is a fallen cornice broken into chunks and strewn across marble steps. But inside, sculpture stands firmly beneath a perfectly intact glass cupola.

In the aftermath of the devastating mega-quake in central Chile, visitors are greeted by jarring contrasts: A general impression of normalcy shaken by pockets of spectacular destruction. One thing is certain. The country's $2 billion tourism industry has taken a beating since Feb. 27.

Chile has lifted the state of catastrophe that outgoing President Michelle Bachelet declared when she sent soldiers into the streets to stop looting and deliver relief. A U.S. State Department warning strongly urging U.S. citizens to avoid tourism and nonessential travel to Chile was narrowed March 12 to areas closest to the epicenter.

Still, travelers canceled half their reservations at Chile's hotels in the first weeks of March. Despite Easter vacations, 30 percent of reservations have been canceled for April. That's bad news for a nation in desperate need of reconstruction dollars, but it may mean opportunity for deal-hunting travelers.

The first startling sight for most visitors is Santiago's banged-up international airport, where the ceiling and walkways were severely damaged. Jumbo jets now empty passengers onto the tarmac, where they collect baggage off the ground and file through customs in a tent.

"It's a bad first impression," said Sebastian Catalan, who runs bike tours of Santiago. "It says, 'Welcome. Chile is a disaster.'"

After the unusual arrival, though, the most surprising thing for tourists may be how undamaged Chile appears.

Given the country's slender geography, only the central regions were widely damaged, particularly coastal cities wiped out by the tsunami. Famous destinations in the northern Atacama Desert and southern Patagonia were entirely untouched.

And thanks to advanced building codes, structures in the capital of Santiago largely escaped the destruction.

There has been some impact on a few attractions: contemporary art exhibits inside the Fine Arts building are closed and the 160-year-old Municipal Theater won't be hosting concerts and performances for months. Chile's grand national library remains closed to the public while engineers examine structural damage and aging Catholic churches throughout the city need rebuilding.

Southern-bound train routes remain suspended, but travel has resumed along the country's main north-south highway. Even some wineries and national parks in the central southern heartland are slowly reopening.

But some landmarks have been transfigured. The first visitors to the Siete Tazas National Park will discover that the namesake string of seven impressive waterfalls dried up overnight when the earthquake opened underground cracks and diverted the falls' source. Park guards are watching anxiously as water trickles again through the cavernous stone cups, hoping the subterranean fissures will fill with silt and restore the roaring cascades.

A similar process saved the fortunes of Roberto Movillo, who owns the nearby Panimavida Hot Springs. After the quake, Movillo saw the water level in his natural wells drop precipitously, but within days they had filled to the point of overflowing.

"Now the problem is the tourists," he said. "That's where the flow has really dropped off."

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A 5.9 magnitude earthquake on Friday shook the south-central swathe of Chile heavily damaged by a devastating February quake, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

Residents in Bio-Bio region were awakened by the quake that lasted 25 seconds, Radio Cooperativa reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 5.9 and struck at 6:03 a.m. (11:03 a.m. British time) 41 miles (66 km) south of the south-central city of Concepcion, which was ravaged by a massive 8.8-magnitude quake on February 27. The USGS initially had reported the quake at a 6.1 magnitude.

Chile's navy ruled out the possibility of a tsunami.

"I have no reports of damage to infrastructure or (injuries) to people," Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter told Radio Cooperativa. "I hope this is the last of the aftershocks that seismologists warned might come after the February 27 quake."
