Tsunami warning for NZ

2009-09-29

Washington - A tsunami warning was issued for New Zealand and other small Pacific islands after a major 7.9 magnitude quake struck in the ocean off American Samoa, US government agencies said on Tuesday.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, a branch of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, issued the warning after the quake hit about 190km southwest of the remote Pacific island of American Samoa. It struck at a depth of 33km.

A tsunami watch was in effect for Hawaii, Papua New Guinea and other small Pacific islands.

The agency noted that its warning did not mean a tsunami had necessarily been generated by the quake. The warning was issued because a quake of this magnitude had the power to generate a destructive tsunami, it said.

In 2004, a quake in the Indian Ocean generated a powerful tsunami that killed tens of thousands people in Asia.

ORIGIN TIME - 1748Z 29 SEP 2009
COORDINATES - 15.3 SOUTH 171.0 WEST
DEPTH - SHALLOWER THAN 100 KM
LOCATION - SAMOA ISLANDS REGION
MAGNITUDE - 7.9

EVALUATION

IT IS NOT KNOWN THAT A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. THIS WARNING IS
BASED ONLY ON THE EARTHQUAKE EVALUATION. AN EARTHQUAKE OF THIS
SIZE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE A DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI THAT CAN
STRIKE COASTLINES NEAR THE EPICENTER WITHIN MINUTES AND MORE
DISTANT COASTLINES WITHIN HOURS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS CENTER
WILL MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA FROM GAUGES NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE TO
DETERMINE IF A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED AND ESTIMATE THE SEVERITY OF
THE THREAT.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

EVALUATION
SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.
FOR ALL AREAS – WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.
ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

Earthquake hits near Samoa, causes 10-foot tsunami

Posted: 02:24 PM ET

(CNN) ? An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 struck in the Samoan Islands region Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The temblor did generate a nearly 10-foot (3-meter) tsunami ? measured from crest to trough ? according to preliminary data, according to Chip McCreery, the Director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii.

Further details were not immediately available.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake was recorded at about 6:48 a.m. (1:28 p.m. ET) at a depth of about 7.4 miles (11.9 km), the USGS reported.
?CNN?s Augie Martin contributed to this report.

Tsunami measuring 1.5m hits American Samoa

By Chris Whitworth and James Murray

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has confirmed that a tsunami has struck American Samoa following an earthquake on Upolu Island.

Spokesperson Nathan Becker said the wave measured 1.5m, which is enough to be dangerous, and that a 0.7m wave struck Western Samoa.

Uncomfirmed reports radio reports suggest that two villages in Samoa have also been hit by a tsunami.

The villages affected are Siumu and Lotofago.

The 7.9 magnitude earthquake off American Samoa has also sparked a tsunami warning in New Zealand.

The Ministry Of Defence is working to assess the threat level in New Zealand

Other Islands in the vicinity such as Niue, Tonga and Fiji have also received warnings.

Breaking news reports on Twitter suggest that a strong aftershock has just been felt.

The US Geological Survey says the earth quake struck the region this morning.
The warning was an automated response, as a quake of that magnitude is known to generate a tsunami.

The quake struck at a depth of 33 km and was 190 km southwest of the remote Pacific Island.

The Ministry of Defence says earthquake scientists are working to assess if the quake poses an actual threat.

The MOD is expected to make a decision by 830am.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated.

There was no immediate indication of how large the tsunami is and no reports of damage at nearby coasts.

The warning center said the quake — originally designated at magnitude-7.9 — hit at 7:48 a.m., Hawaii time.

The tsunami watch was declared at 8:05.

The quake was located 110 miles east-northeast of Hihifo, Tonga; 125 miles south-southwest of Apia, Samoa; 435 miles north-northeast of Nukualofa, Tonga; and 1,670 miles north-northeast of Auckland, New Zealand.

The warning center said quakes of this magnitude have the potential to power destructive tsunami that can strike nearby coasts within minutes.

If a tsunami is generated, the earliest expected time of arrival in Hawaii would be 1:11 p.m., the warning center said.

A tsunami warning is in effect for American Samoa, Samoa, Niue, Wallis-Futuna, Tokelau, Cook Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Kermadec Islands, Howland-Baker, Jarvis Island, New Zealand, French Polynesia and Palmyra Atoll.

Hawaii is listed as under a tsunami watch along with Vanuatu, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Johnston Atoll, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Papua New Guinea, Pohnpeo, Wake Island, Pitcairn Island and Midway.

Tsunami Warning - Threat To New Zealand

Wednesday, 30 September, 2009 - 07:15

There is a tsunami risk to New Zealand from the 8.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred of the coast of the Samoan Islands Region today at 0648 hours NZDT.

The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management has issued a tsunami warning for New Zealand coasts.

Information from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre and GNS Science is that the earthquake is likely to have generated a tsunami.

The warning is for all of New Zealand.

The Ministry's Director, John Hamilton, said that the Ministry has alerted the country's regional Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Groups, Police, Fire Service, Ministry of Health, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and other government agencies, and media. The Ministry has activated the National Crisis Management Centre and is co-ordinating central government response.

The Civil Defence Emergency Management sector is activating its emergency plans. Regional Civil Defence Emergency Management Groups are working urgently with local authorities, local emergency services and local media to warn and if necessary evacuate coastal areas at risk.

Detailed evacuation advice will come from local authorities and local emergency services. People should act on it promptly. If told to evacuate they should, where possible, take a radio and cellular phone with them, along with items that are essential for them such as glasses, hearing aid and medicines.

GNS Science is convening the tsunami expert panel and all available New Zealand and international data about the earthquake and sea levels are being monitored and analysed.

The warning follows an earthquake at: Location: Samoa Islands Region Time & Date: 1748 Zulu 29 SEPTEMBER 2009 NZ Time: 0648 NZDT 30 SEPTEMBER 2009 Co-ordinates: 15.3 South 171.0 West Depth: 33 km Magnitude: 8.3 (Is provisional and may be adjusted)

Re: 8.0 Earthquake - Samoa Islands Region - Tsunami alert!

Thanks to one and all on this tsunami warning ). I live close to the sea, about 2 m above sea level, and last night had a tsunami dream wow....so we're down here watching for tsunamis in about 2-3 hours and I live near the beach, so it will be a most interesting/nerve-wracking day...heading for the beach to walk the dog now, so will be a little jittery hehe.
If I hear it's hit East Cape /North Island hard, then I'll still have an hour to move to higher ground. Good luck to one and all in the tsunami-potentiated region.

Re: 8.0 Earthquake - Samoa Islands Region - Tsunami alert!

The tsunami generated in the Pacific is predicted to hit New Zealand's East Cape at 9.44am and will be approximiately one metre high.

Samoan reports say the wave that hit in Apia was 0.7 of a metre while the second, larger wave in Pago Pago was measured at 1.7 metres.

Most low lying coastal areas of Apia have been affected with damage to many homes but there are no reports of deaths or injuries at this time.

Sea level readings indicated a tsunami was generated in the Pacific and Warwick Smith, senior seismologist at GNS, told Breakfast that if there is a tsunami, it will hit the East Cape first at 9.44am.

It would then hit Gisborne at 10.00am, Napier at 10.40am, Wellington at 10.50am and Auckland at 11.12am.

Civil Defence says the tsunami is expected to reach New Zealand but will only be around a metre high.

UPDATE 1-8.0 magnitude quake generates tsunami off Samoa islands

Wed Sep 30, 2009 1:06am IST Email | Print | Share | Single Page [-] Text [+]

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (Reuters) - A powerful 8.0 magnitude earthquake in the Pacific off the Samoa islands region generated a tsunami, U.S. government agencies said on Tuesday.

Sea level readings indicated a tsunami was generated, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, a branch of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said.

The agency earlier issued a tsunami warning for New Zealand, American Samoa and other small Pacific islands.

The West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said that a tsunami had been observed at Apia, Western Samoa, and at Pago Pago, American Samoa. The waves at Pago Pago were 5.1 feet (1.57 metres) above normal sea level.

In Western Samoa, some residents told Radio New Zealand they had felt a big jolt and were recommended by authorities to move to higher ground.

An official from American Samoa told Fox television he had felt shaking for up to five minutes.

Police in Tonga said they had not received any word of the quake or tsunami warning yet.

The epicenter of the quake was located 120 miles (190 km) southwest of American Samoa, a remote Pacific island, the U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS earlier said the quake measured 7.9 magnitude. It struck at a depth of 11.2 miles (18 km).

"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts," the Pacific warning center said. (Reporting by Stacey Joyce, editing by Frances Kerry)
