73,000 fake N95 masks seized in city raids

PUNE: Over 73,000 fake N95 masks were seized by the crime branch, Pune, from two different places in the city and two people were arrested on
Wednesday.
Acting on a complaint by American firm 3M, two teams led by assistant commissioners of police Sangramsinh Nishandar and Shyam Mohite conducted raids on a godown in the Parvati area and on a distributor?s shop in Sadashiv Peth and confiscated two vans containing the masks.
?3M is the largest manufacturer of swine flu masks in the world. The firm had received a tip-off about the arrival of fake masks in Pune. As soon as the firm alerted the office of the crime branch, the police swung into action and seized the fake masks,? Nishandar said.
?Two suspects ? Rajesh Narayankar (24), manager of Parakh Pharmaceuticals, and Amol Murgud (19), incharge of Mehta Life Science ? have been arrested,? he said.
The firm (3M) has forwarded technical details of the masks to the police for investigations, said deputy commissioner of police Anil Kumbhare (crime). ?The actual cost of the original N95 mask is Rs 90 ($1.80), but the duplicate ones were being sold for as high as Rs 150 ($3) each in medical shops,? he said.
?The firm (3M) suspects that the fake masks were smuggled into Pune either from China or Korea. We are trying to find out how the suspects brought the masks to Pune and who their distributors are. The police have recovered 73,319 masks,? Kumbhare said.
