DESCRIPTION
At least seven hospitals in the greater Montreal region are battling gastroenteritis outbreaks, prompting health officials to enforce strict visiting rules. Among the seven hospitals, the Montreal Cardiology Institute is the worst hit, where more than 15 cases have been documented in recent days, with three alone since Saturday. The infected patients were staying in the surgical ward, but have since been transferred to a regular ward, where they've been quarantined on a temporary basis, said a hospital official. Visiting hours have also been reduced, and family members are urged to call the hospitals before planning a trip, health officials said. People with regular appointments will be admitted to hospitals with outbreaks. Patients with gastroenteritis often battle vomiting and diarrhea. Other hospitals reporting outbreaks include:
- H?pital Maisonneuve-Rosemont.
- H?pital Saint-Luc.
- H?pital Lasalle.
- H?pital Fleury.
- H?pital Saint-Mary.
- H?pital H?tel-Dieu.
Health officials believe the outbreak took root in the hospitals after the virus was inadvertently introduced by one or several patients who may have been carrying the bug without knowing. The outbreaks are isolated and should not be a cause for concern, according to the Montreal Public Health Department.
