AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 2203Z 07 OCT 2009
COORDINATES - 13.0 SOUTH 166.3 EAST
DEPTH - 33 KM
LOCATION - VANUATU ISLANDS
MAGNITUDE - 8.0

LAT - LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
LON - LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)
TIME - TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND
COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS.

AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY.

THIS CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED.

DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS
DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. FOR
THOSE AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

NO TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS FOR OTHER COASTAL AREAS ALTHOUGH SOME
MAY EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA LEVEL CHANGES. FOR ALL AREAS COVERED BY
THIS CENTER...THE TSUNAMI WARNING AND WATCH ARE CANCELLED.

THIS WILL BE THE FINAL BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.

THE WEST COAST/ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WILL ISSUE PRODUCTS

Big Quakes in Vanuatu

Wednesday October 7, 2009

A pair of major earthquakes has struck the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu. The first event (at 9:03 am Thursday local time) had a tentative magnitude of 7.8, according to its dedicated USGS page. It was a typical subduction-related thrust event, unlike last week's Samoa earthquake, which was in the bending slab outboard from the subduction zone. Also, it was on a different plate boundary, so they were not related beyond the tenuous, unpredictable sense in which distant large events can slightly tweak a fault zone and speed up its inevitable failure.

A tsunami about half a meter high was reported in Vanuatu, but alerts around the Pacific were canceled.

A particularly large aftershock of magnitude 7.1 followed at 10:13, presumably with the same mechanism. When you look at the maps of the mainshock and this event, keep in mind that the subducting plate is moving eastward, opposite to the case of the Samoan quake. (News agencies are reporting a 7.3 aftershock only 10 minutes after the mainshock. That was a false alarm that was withdrawn after review by a seismologist.)

Aftershocks have a small but finite chance of being bigger than the preceding event. In that case, they might well be called the mainshock and the first event renamed a foreshock.

Earthquakes rock South Pacific

art_pacific_quake_02_google.webp

(CNN) -- Three major earthquakes struck within an hour and 10 minutes Thursday morning near Vanuatu in the South Pacific, prompting a tsunami warning that was quickly lifted, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The first quake, with a magnitude of 7.8, struck at 9:03 a.m. (6:03 p.m. ET) at a depth of 35 km (22 miles) and an epicenter 295 km (180 miles) north-northwest of Luganville, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu.

A second quake, with a magnitude of 7.7, struck 15 minutes later at the same depth and an epicenter of 340 km (210 miles) north-northwest of Luganville.

The third quake, with a magnitude of 7.1, struck at 10:13 a.m. (7:13 p.m. ET) at about the same depth and an epicenter of 280 km (175 miles) north-northwest of Luganville.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued and then quickly lifted a regional tsunami warning and watch for parts of the Pacific near the first earthquake's epicenter.

The first data from a buoy at Luganville on Vanuatu detected a tsunami wave of 4 centimeters (1.6 inches) at Luganville on Vanuatu, said Victor Sardina, a geophysicist with the center. Have you been affected? Share photos, video on iReport

A second pulse of the wave was 10 centimeters (3.9 inches), he said. "It looks like a very small wave," he told CNN in a telephone interview.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, Sardina said.

Still, he added, "What we advise is that people living in the coastal area [of nearby islands] just get away from the seashore and go inland until we get data that the danger has passed."

The center also issued a tsunami advisory for Hawaii, and said further evaluation of the event could see the threat alert elevated.

The earthquake near Vanuatu was unlikely to cause a tsunami that will pose a threat to New Zealand, New Zealand's Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management told CNN affiliate TV New Zealand.

Authorities in New Caledonia were evacuating people from the island's eastern shore and from the nearby Loyalty Islands to higher ground after the tsunami warning, the station reported.

Police said the French territory's capital of Noumea was expecting waves to hit the coastline.

Authorities had issued a tsunami alert on television and radio and asked people in low-lying coastal areas to evacuate to higher ground, said the manager at the Hotel Le Paris. She said she felt the shake but had not seen any damage.

On Espiritu Santo Island in Vanuatu, dive-shop owner Rehan Syed said he was aware of no reports of damages or injuries.

"We have the sun out and winds are pretty normal," he told CNN. "Pretty cloudy skies but nothing more than that."

"We felt the quake (my chair and my keyboard moved) but did not take too much notice as we live with shakes every week," said John Nicholls of Vanuatu Hotels in an e-mail.

At the New Caledonia Hotel, guests were evacuated to higher ground, General Manager Torani George told CNN, adding that he had felt "nothing, nothing at all."

"There is no panic, nothing," he said.
