JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department of Health has reported the state's sixth swine flu death.

Health officials say the latest death occurred in Jones County. The victim was an adult female.

The number of confirmed cases of swine flu in Mississippi has risen to 840.

Symptoms of swine flu in humans are similar to those of seasonal flu, with fever, respiratory symptoms and body aches. According to the Health Department, many of the swine flu deaths nationwide were among people with pre-existing health conditions.

Second swine flu death reported in Jones County

According to the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), a second swine flu death has been confirmed in Jones County.

In a press release issued Monday, MSDH reported that laboratory-confirmed human cases of novel H1N1 (swine) flu have been identified in 77 of Mississippi?s 82 counties ? six of those resulting in death. Roughly 900 (898) cases have been identified statewide since May 15.

In Jones County, 12 H1N1 swine flu cases have been identified since May 15, with two deaths since Aug. 7.

Symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of seasonal flu including fever, respiratory symptoms and body aches. H1N1 swine flu has contributed to a number of deaths nationwide, particularly in those with pre-existing health conditions.

MSDH expects swine flu vaccine to be available locally by mid-October. The agency will offer vaccinations through county health departments, participating physicians? offices and other locations, and is working with other agencies to ensure the availability of the vaccine for all students.

Until vaccinations become available, preventive hygiene remains the best protection from swine flu. Pregnant women, children younger than five years old, and anyone with chronic heart or lung problems (including asthma) are at higher risk for complications from H1N1 swine flu.
