The deaths were reported at a farm of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, a training-cum-demonstration centre for farmers, in village Chebri, 85km west of the state capital Agartala.
?Preliminary investigation in our state laboratory revealed that the mass deaths of chicken were due to the Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD),? said Narayan Chandra Das, director of the animal resources development department in Tripura.
Earlier 300 chickens had died in the same farm last week.
?We have sent samples of the dead birds to Bhopal and different other laboratories outside Tripura to confirm if the chickens died of bird flu or any other disease,? Das said.
?Though our laboratory tests and the symptoms of the deaths do not indicate that these birds were affected by avian influenza, however, we have to have confirmation beyond doubt.?
Tripura Chief Secretary Sashi Prakash held an emergency meeting with senior officials and experts to discuss preventive measure for containing the spread of the bird flu in the state.
?The government has asked the Border Security Force (BSF) and Mobile Task Force (MTF) to seal the 856-km long India-Bangladesh border along Tripura to check smuggling of poultry products from Bangladesh,? said Pranab Debbarma, Tripura?s animal resources development minister.
The minister said the government has formed 71 Rapid Response Team (RPT) to examine the state?s 1,600 poultry farms. A control room has also been set up to provide information to the locals.
?The state?s nearly 11,000 poultry farmers had brought chicks and poultry products from Andhra Pradesh and Kolkata and not from the northeastern states,? the minister said.
Manipur, another state in the northeast, had last week sounded an alert after bird flu was confirmed there. However, there were no fresh cases of bird deaths in Manipur.
Debbarma said: ?The state?s nearly 11,000 poultry farmers had brought chicks from Kolkata and not from the north-eastern states.?
The Tripura government has published advertisements in newspapers and local TV channels that the state is free from bird flu.
About 34 rapid response teams with five members in each group led by a veterinarian were involved in the culling after laboratory tests confirmed the dead birds had the highly pathogenic H5NI strains of the bird flu.
?There have been no fresh reports of bird flu from Manipur although we are keeping a strict surveillance across the state,? said K. Gopal, nodal officer of the Animal Disease Control Programme in Manipur.
Health officials said there were no immediate reports of humans contracting the virus although a massive surveillance campaign was on to ensure safety of the locals.
More than 200,000 people have gone through health checkups so far.
?A few people were kept under watch but tests have turned negative for bird flu infection," a health official, said. ? IANS
