Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said an emergency operation was being set up.

In the central city the earthquake felt as violent as the 7.1 earthquake on September 4.

"This is obviously a dreadful, dreadful aftershock, it felt more like a new quake to me," he told Radio NZ.

"What I can see from where I'm from... there's a significant amount of additional damage."

He said pipes were burst on the street.

"The waste water pipe has broken."

There were unconfirmed reports of serious injuries, he said.

"Emergency services now have the incredibly difficult task of moving through a city which is evacuating itself from the central city area."

...erald reporter Jarrod Booker said the Tuesday shake lasted approximately a minute and was extremely violent — rocking buildings back and forth.

He said people had left buildings and were out on the streets where tarmac had cracked and water mains had burst, causing extensive flooding.

News media showed tweeted pictures of crumpled buildings, bricks from buildings piled on smashed cars and concerned residents checking damage.

Television stations reported multiple fatalities were confirmed, but no exact count was available.

Mayor Bob Parker said he was "thrown quite a distance" by the earthquake.

"That was, in the city central anyway, as violent as the one that happened on the 4th of September," he told Radio New Zealand.

1. She can smell burning rubber,
2. There are fires,
3. The water service is out,
4. Sewer lines are broken,
5. Some roads are impassable,
6. The bridges are out.

Re: 6.3 and 5.6 Earthquakes Hit ChristChurch New Zealand February 21 2011 - Heavy Damage - Deaths

People in the affected area should:

Expect aftershocks. Each time one is felt, drop, cover, and hold on.

Check yourself first for injuries and get first aid if necessary before helping injured or trapped persons.

Assess your home or workplace for damage. If the building appears unsafe get everyone out. Use the stairs, not an elevator and when outside, watch out for fallen power lines or broken gas lines. Stay out of damaged areas.

Look for and extinguish small fires if it is safe to do so. Fire is a significant hazard following earthquakes.

Listen to the radio for updated emergency information and instructions.

Do not overload phone lines with non-emergency calls.

Help people who require special assistance - infants, elderly people, those without transportation, families who may need additional help, people with disabilities, and the people who care for them.

Re: 6.3 and 5.6 Earthquakes Hit ChristChurch New Zealand February 21 2011 - Heavy Damage - Deaths

The shallow nature of this quake will cause more damage (just like Haiti). It was only 3 miles deep.

The new 5.6 aftershock is only 6 miles deep.

That is in contrast to the 6.4 quake 770 miles NNE of Auckland (about 12 hours earlier) that was 349 miles deep.

Feb 22 2011 - Christchurch badly damaged by magnitude 6.3 earthquake

Christchurch has experienced a major earthquake centred south of the city, and severe damage and casualties have been reported.

Last updated February 22, 3:00 pm

Shaking intensity in the city was much greater for this earthquake than the magnitude 7.1 earthquake from last September, or any of the aftershocks. The highest shaking was recorded at Pages Road Pumping Station at 188 %g, with readings of 127 %g at Heathcote Valley Primary School and 107 %g at Hulverstone Road Pumping Station.

This is due to the proximity of the epicentre to the city and the shallow depth. We will bring your more information as it becomes available.

No wonder there's been so much damage.

Reading Sally's last comments on the old NZ thread, it's clear they didn't finish repairs to water dams, etc.
