The quake also destroyed some buildings in the area, reports said.

The US Geological Survey said the 6.1 magnitude quake hit at 1100 GMT about 53 kilometres (33 miles) west-southwest of the port of Bandar Abbas.

The tremor was felt in the city, which is capital of Hormozgan province and further afield, the Fars news agency reported, quoting local officials as saying some buildings were destroyed.

Fars said the officials said the quake had a magnitude of more than six on the Richter scale.

State radio reported the quake was 46 km (29 miles) west of Bandar Abbas and people ran panicking into the streets.

Residents in the United Arab Emirates, across the Gulf from Iran, reported feeling a slight tremor. Bankers and office workers evacuated buildings in Dubai, eyewitnesses said.

Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth’s crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.

The worst in recent times hit Bam in south-eastern Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people – about a quarter of the city’s population – and destroying the city’s ancient mud-built citadel.

Powerful earthquakes strike Asia


Two powerful earthquakes have struck the north-eastern Indonesian Moluccas islands and Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, triggering tsunami alerts.

The first, which had a magnitude of 6.6, occurred at 0902 (0002 GMT) about 120km (75 miles) north of the city of Ternate, the US Geological Survey said.

A few minutes later, a 7.2-magnitude quake hit Hokkaido's coast, 220km (135 miles) east of the capital, Sapporo.

There have so far been no reports of casualties from either country.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a warning for a 50cm (20-inch) tsunami along the eastern coast of Hokkaido and the north-eastern coast of the country's main island of Honshu.

A tsunami alert issued immediately after the tremor in the Moluccas islands was lifted by Indonesia's meteorological agency when the feared wave never came.

"I felt the shaking but it wasn't really strong," Ojihan Washab, a hospital worker in Ternate, told the AFP news agency afterwards.

A tsunami forms when energy from an earthquake vertically jolts the seabed by several metres, displacing a huge volume of water.

An earthquake off Indonesia triggered the 2004 Asian tsunami, which killed approximately 220,000 people across the Indian Ocean.
Indonesia and Japan both lie on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active areas.

Iran earthquake killed 4 and destroyed 200 villages

طهران وكالات الأنباء: أعلن مسئول إقليمي إيراني أن الزلزال العنيف الذي ضرب جنوب إيران قد أسفر عن مقتل أربعة أشخاص وإصابة 26 آخرين وتدمير قرابة 200 قرية. Tehran news agencies: regional Iranian official announced that the violent earthquake which struck southern Iran has been killing four people and injuring 26 others and destroying about 200 villages.
وأعلن مسئول في محافظة هرمزكان الإيرانية أنه تم إرسال فرق الإنقاذ إلي المنطقة المنكوبة لمساعدة المتضررين. An official in the province of Iranian buses were sent rescue teams to the stricken region to assist those affected.
