6.0 and 5.8, Earthquakes hits Christchurch - Report that airport being evacuated

Re: 6.0 and 5.8, Earthquakes hits Christchurch - Report that airport being evacuated

Police to relocate out of Christchurch Central station

December 29, 2011, 1:26 pm

Canterbury Police are to undertake a planned relocation out of the Christchurch Central Police Station in Hereford Street, over the next two to three months.
...
"The aftershocks of 23 December will mean some reassessment of earthquake risk forecasts, with the risk of further significant quakes potentially higher than previously forecast.

"Because of this ongoing risk of continuing earthquakes we are taking a cautious approach and opting to undertake a planned relocation out of the building over the next two to three months."

Assistant Commissioner Cliff says plans were already under way for Police to move out of the Hereford Street building and into a new station over the next five years.

"This decision accelerates those plans. We have already begun discussions with our emergency services partners at Fire and Ambulance over a possible shared facility in Christchurch and these discussions will continue."

The earthquake-damaged Lyttelton Police Station will not be repaired. The station, the oldest working station in New Zealand, was hit hard in the February 22 quake and suffered more damage in the aftershocks...

Lyttelton police have been working out of a garage next to the station since February and will move into portable buildings in coming weeks.

Early morning quakes rattle Chch

By Matthew Theunissen and Kurt Bayer 10:06 AM Monday Jan 2, 2012

A swarm of large aftershocks which rocked Christchurch overnight and knocked out power to thousands of homes has not caused any new damage to the rattled city, authorities say.

The shaky start to what Cantabrians hoped would be a calm 2012 included a violent magnitude-5.5 quake at 5.45am felt across the region.
...
Christchurch mayor Bob Parker said the latest quakes have "rattled" residents but they needed to "remain calm, and be assured that everything was being done to ensure key services remained operational".

He said: "We have staff on stand-by ready to react quickly if the situation requires it. It's not a great start to a new year, but everyone is working hard to ensure we have a resilient and safe city in the future.

"I've heard that because several of these quakes have been offshore, some people are concerned about the possibility of a tsunami, but I'd like to reassure them that this is highly unlikely.

"The advice we have received from GNS is that the faults offshore are short in length and not likely to generate a significant tsunami. The sea inundation to land is low risk, probably not more than a storm surge."
Council facilities are being checked early this morning to make sure they can open as normal.

Anyone who is feeling distressed or overwhelmed by the aftershocks and needs extra help to cope with the situation can call the Canterbury Support Line on 0800 777 846 between 8am - 11pm seven days a week.
