Fifth Swine Flu Death Reported in State

A fifth Connecticut resident has died of swine flu. The Department of Public Health says the patient, who had underlying medical conditions, was between 50 and 59 years of age and lived in Hartford County.
One other death has been reported in Hartford County, and there have been three deaths in Waterbury, including a six-year-old child. In each case, the patient had other health problems and had been hospitalized.
In all 824 cases of the H1N1 virus have been confirmed in Connecticut, with 36 of those hospitalized. Health authorities say the total number of cases is likely higher than that, because those who suffer mild symptoms may never see a physician to be tested.

Fifth State Resident With Swine Flu Dies

By ARIELLE LEVIN BECKER | The Hartford Courant
June 24, 2009
A Hartford County resident with swine flu died Friday [June 19], the fifth state death linked to the H1N1 virus.

The person was between the ages of 50 and 59, had an underlying medical condition and died at the Hospital of Central Connecticut at New Britain General.

The patient was admitted to the hospital June 13 with fever and respiratory symptoms and died of respiratory failure, according to the hospital.

"Our thoughts are with this patient's family and loved ones," hospital spokeswoman Helayne Lightstone said. "We are working diligently and taking every possible step to prevent transmission of the disease to protect our patients, visitors and staff."

The hospital did not identify the patient's underlying medical condition but said it is known to shorten life expectancy and might have increased susceptibility to swine flu. The four other state residents with swine flu who have died — three Waterbury residents and one from Hartford County — also had underlying health issues.

Statewide, 824 residents have had confirmed cases of swine flu, although health officials say that the actual number is probably much higher because many people with mild symptoms recovered without seeking care from a doctor or hospital. Thirty-six people have been hospitalized, and most of them have recovered and been discharged.
