Rajendra Dake, who was shifted from civic Naidu hospital to government-run Sassoon hospital in a critical condition, had been undergoing treatment since August 22, they said.

Meanwhile, the district administration has appealed people to keep celebrations on the Ananth Chaturdashi day, signalling concluding day of Ganesh festival tomorrow, a low key affair to avoid large scale overcrowding in the city.

Wanowrie resident dies of H1N1; toll reaches 33

PUNE: The swine flu toll in the city reached 33 after a 53-year-old man from Wanowrie succumbed to the contagion on Wednesday.


According to joint director of health services Ashok Ladda, Rajendra Gajanan Dake, a resident of Wanowrie, died at Sassoon general hospital at 9 am. He had earlier tested positive for H1N1.

The patient was admitted to the isolation ICU of Sassoon on August 22.

"He was being treated at the ICU for the last 12 days. He was referred to Sasson from Naidu hospital," said Ladda.

Dake had a history of diabetes and hypertension. He did not respond to the treatment and his condition deteriorated in last couple of days. The patient succumbed on Wednesday morning, Ladda said.

Meanwhile, eight more people tested positive for H1N1 flu in the district on Wednesday. "There are 14 patients presently being treated at the isolation ICUs of various government and private hospitals within PMC and PCMC limits. Of which, five are on ventilator and their condition is critical," said Ladda.

"Around 7,637 people were screened across the district, of which 264 were found suspected and given Tamiflu," said Ladda. Around 44 patients were discharged from various hospitals in the city on Wednesday, added Ladda.

Meanwhile, a high-level meeting will be held at New Delhi on Thursday to review status of H1N1 infection and trends observed in various states. Representatives from affected states will put forward their observations and suggestions about clinical management of H1N1 flu. Representatives of union health ministry and the WHO will be spearheading the meeting, said Ladda.

Ladda said, "B J Medical College and Sassoon hospital have suggested combination of two anti-viral drugs instead of just Tamiflu to check deterioration in the condition of critical patients. Use of double dose of tamiflu is other option in case of critical patients. This suggestion will be put forth in the Thursday meeting."
