Power off in some eastern suburbs. Schools evacuated. Red zone evacuated before the 6.0. Reports of some injuries.

I was driving when the 6.0 hit and had to stop til it passed. The earthquakes were centred towards the sea in the eastern suburbs.

Strong quakes again rock damaged New Zealand city
(AP) ? 1 hour ago

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? A series of earthquakes shook the quake-weary New Zealand city of Christchurch on Monday, collapsing at least one building and briefly trapping two people inside a damaged church.

Power was cut to about 10,000 homes in the city's eastern suburbs and dust billowed from the cordoned-off inner city devastated in February's major earthquake.

People fled buildings in panic when a 5.2-magnitude quake struck during lunchtime; just over an hour later, a 6.0 was recorded, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Six people have been taken to hospitals with minor injuries from falling debris, an ambulance service said...

Power was cut to approximately 56,000 customers in Christchurch (just over 25% of our customers) following the 6.0 magnitude earthquake at 2.20pm.

Areas affected include Spreydon, Sumner, Redcliffs, Heathcote, New Brighton, Dallington, Fendalton and St Albans.

Our teams are working to restore power as soon as possible, however access to some areas is difficult due to heavy traffic on the roads.

From: http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/ne...011/5139229/GNS-upgrades-earthquake-strengths

LATEST: GNS Science has upgraded the strength of yesterday's earthquakes.

The largest earthquake has been upgraded to magnitude 6.3, with a shallower depth of 6km.

The 2.20pm quake was originally analysed as 6.0 in magnitude at a depth of 9km.

The 1.01pm tremor has also been upgraded to 5.7, and was at a depth of 10km - not 11km - new GNS figures show.

....
There is a boil water notice in effect.
