44 Ohioans Being Monitored for Potential Ebola Exposure

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Health departments in Ohio are monitoring 44 residents who have a travel history to countries with Ebola cases, Ohio officials said Monday.

The deadly virus emerged in 2014 in West Africa, infecting people in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. A new epidemic was declared in Guinea, and there are also currently people infected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At least nine people have died.

Ohio is not alone in monitoring people with travel histories. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said health departments were quarantining 11 people who had come to the state from the affected countries.

....The Ohio Department of Health said Monday the state will monitor people for 21 days.

For example, DeWine pointed to the part of the bill that says the state health department can't force someone to quarantine unless they've been "medically diagnosed" with an illness or have come into contact with someone who has.

Ohio health officials, he said, are monitoring 44 people who have returned from places in Africa with active Ebola outbreaks.

"While it is currently believed these individuals are at very low risk of having contracted Ebola," DeWine wrote in his letter, a copy of which was obtained by the USA Today Network Ohio bureau. "If one of them develops symptoms, SB 22 would prevent our public health apparatus from swinging into rapid action and taking decisive steps to isolate, quarantine, and protect the public."

Members of his own party overwhelmingly disagreed.

"The truth of the matter is no one branch of government is meant to have unfettered control over our society indefinitely ...," Sen. Rob McColley, R-Napoleon, said during the floor debate on SB 22. "There is nothing in this bill that prohibits the governor, the director of health or any other state agency from issuing a public health order. We are making sure we restore the natural separation of powers. That's all this is."

And they plan to override DeWine's veto. ..
